2,800 Layoffs At NASA
The Space shuttle contractor announces there will be 2,800 workers layoff at NASA center.
As the shuttle program will close down this year, more than 50% of the workers there will be laid off. This is the announcement made on Friday by the responsible from the NASA contractor. However this is by no means something that took us by surprise as, the program coming to an end, these layoffs were expected by everyone., the problem is exactly who will be laid off from the employees there and what will be the criteria. Â There are still two shuttles lift of – the Endeavour and the Atlantis.
In two weeks time, the Endeavour is about to go on its final mission. This mission will take as long as 14 days and its main objective is to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer particle detector to the International Space Station (ISS).
The last mission of the Atlantis will take place in June – STS – 135 and this is the official date the space shuttle will close down. These launches will take place from the Kennedy Space Center. This space center is the one that is most used by the USA NASA space forces , but there are as well some other locations, such as Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas, and the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), in Huntsville, Alabama. Â
Anyhow, the people that have worked there will not be left by themselves with any help whatsoever. The shuttle contractor intends to provide people that will be unlucky and be laid off with different programs in order to be satisfied and have something to go to. They will be offered things like participating in job fairs, interview trainings, taught to make their resume and as well probably some retention planning.
The exact number of people that will be laid off is between 2,600 and 2,800 , of the total of 5,600 employees still working there. Once this is done, the company will be significantly smaller but this does not mean that it will be less important. “”USA has a great deal to offer in the way of skills, experience and expertise, and we are looking forward to providing our unique capabilities to a wide variety of new and existing customers” ; according to Virginia Barnes, USA president and chief executive officer.
