The new drug that the FDA has agreed upon is known as Ella and is made by French Company – HRA Pharma. Having been approved by the FDA, it will soon be able to be sold in the United States by the Watson Pharmaceuticals.
Under the Bush administration no other such contraceptive was regulated, but those that were already on the market, moreover, they were sold under age checks.
What does this new contraceptive pill brings new unlike others? The fact that it actually can prevent pregnancy after 5 days time has passed. After having made their own researches, the Food and Drug Administration has agreed to enter it on the sale. Anyhow, it is not intended to be used as a method of contraception.
It is planned to be taken out on the market on the quarter of the 2010 year.
As it has a total of five days possibility to be taken after sexual unprotected sex, it will have as its main competitor, the Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd’s Plan B, which works after three days of sexual unprotected intercourse. However, while this is available without any prescription for those that are more than 17 years old, Ella is a pill that requires a prescription for all ages.
These mornings after pills are not accepted by the entire American population. The thing with them is that they actually contain many bad substances for your body. Moreover, this is not the only thing that Americans worry about. There is as well, the fact that an increased number of these pills will as well lead to an increase in promoting promiscuity.
Some even go that far as to question what Ella is good for. As they believe that it moreover an abortion pill than a contraception one. Therefore, it may not be as safe as you may think but in any case, the FDA approved it.
This is because it contains a type of progesterone receptor modular that makes it a part of the drugs that interfere with pregnancy making it impossible to develop, as it interferes with the hormone progesterone, which is crucial for getting pregnant. It is a very tough drug and studies have shown that women that take it in the three days after the sexual intercourse, have a rate of 1.9 percentage to get pregnant. Better than the anticipated rate of 5.6, while those that take it between two to five days after sex, have a rate of 2.2 to get pregnant, as well better than the expected rate of 5.5 percentages.
