Admission to college depends on students criminal records
Because of the many cases of underage violence many of the American universities began to conduct background checks on students whose criminal records are not clear. In fact the universities want to deal this way with all of their applicants, so that the campus safety can be increased. But the system that has to be developed in order to make this possible is very complex and has already found its opponents. Darby Dickerson, the president of the Stetson University College of Law believes that including criminal background checks into the university admission process will not solve all the problems related to campus safety but will help cut off some elements that will bring trouble for sure.
On the other side of the fence there’s Barmak Nassirian, a director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers says that the inclusion of the background checks in the admission to college is not quite fair because it can not be established if a teenager that has made one mistake will do it again or whether one that has a clear record will not do anything wrong.
The most common methods of getting information related to the applicants’ criminal records were by now the questions from the Common Application forms, and out of the total number of applicants only about 10 percent look like they need further checking.
