One of the most famous beings around the World Cup tournament is for no doubt Germany’s oracle Paul, a two-year-old octopus who guessed all Germany’s results during the final tournament. Thus, it anticipated every victory and defeat Germans provided during the tournament, picking one of the two boxes inscribed with both Germany and its opponents names. Furthermore, Paul was also put to guess who will lift the final trophy at the end of Sunday’s final between Spain and the Netherlands and chose the Spaniards box after three minutes of “thinking”.
Tanja Munzig, who is the spokeswoman for Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen declared: “That was fast – it looks like a clear-cut victory for Spain.” Paul’s predictions also concerned Spanish Marca newspaper which headlined on their website: “The octopus Paul makes us champions.”

The whole octopus fever concerned even Spain’s Prime Minister and Environment and Fisheries Minister, the first one, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero saying: “I am concerned for the octopus…I am thinking of sending him a protective team,” while the second one, Elena Espinosa declared: „On Monday I shall be at the European Council of Ministers and I shall be asking for a (fishing) ban on Paul the octopus so Germans do not eat him.”11

Hahaha… this is one of the most stupid things I have ever heard in my life. How is an octopus supposed to know which country is going to win the world cup? Pure nonsense! I’ve bet everything on Netherland and I really see them as having a shot at winning the title. Besides, if this octopus is so smart and lucky, why don’t the people working at the aquarium start betting on soccer matches by asking Paul to pick.

Come on… cut the octopus some slack, it’s just a matter of luck. One question though… how on earth did those guys get the idea to put boxes with country flags in the aquarium of the poor animal???

  3. Gary says:

This is hilarious! It seems that the octopus predicted it right! Spain did win the cup. I wonder if they are going to fry him now.

Laugh all you want but there are animals out there that have an extra sense and they really can predict these things. I don’t know if it’s called intuition or some sort of magnetic energy field and they pick up vibes for certain actions which are about to happened but I really believe Paul is on to something here. You people have got to stop looking for scientific explanations for everything in your life and start believing more. Maybe… this is just a miracle!

Come one you guys… it is an octopus and as far as I learned in biology class, octopuses don’t have special capacities and they can’t predict the future. They don’t have telepathic abilities and there isn’t any crystal globe where they can read into the future. It is just an animal that takes a lucky guess. An octopus cannot think and therefore it was all a matter of luck. If I asked you to pick one out of 2 numbers, 10 times in a row and you would guess the correct number 9 times out of 10, that makes you a person with amazing capacities?

I want octopus Paul in my house so he can predict some winner and get me a lot of money from sports betting!!

How many of you thought about cooking Paul?
