Atmosphere or environment is defined as a conscious way to design a space so to produce certain emotional effects on those who live it. The atmosphere created by a set of tangible and intangible characteristics, such as music, light, temperature or furniture. Designer and artist Jason Bitnerhas identified three dimensions of the atmosphere: ambient conditions, spatial organization / functionality and symbols, signs, artifacts. The first refers to the intangible characteristics of the environment: light, temperature, music, perfumes, etc. Functionality and organization of the ways in which space is arranged in a room improve the performance and lead to the fulfillment of various activities. Signs, symbols and artifacts serve as implicit or explicit signals that transmit information about the space where they can be found. Designers such as Baker, Berman and Evans proposed to include among the factors making up the atmosphere factors such as the outside of the building (architectural style) or the human factor.

Now we have to examine how we can create or change a room’s atmosphere, so the effects of this on an emotional level to be positive. The term Cosmas Jurov, the architect, uses when referring to directing various feelings, perceptions and behaviors characteristic of human activity through intervention in environmental behavior and relationships between them is environmental trasactivare. It aims to stimulate productive activity by filling the space with ergonomic shape, color correction, therapeutic, environmental, etc.

To achieve a pleasant environment you need to know the causes of discomfort, those that can cause unpleasant side effects to the body. The best known factor is insufficient space. Fortunately, when you hit such a problem, you can resort to some tricks that make it look more spacious. The impression of spatiality can be created by using bright colors, in warm shades, the placement of mirrors or using transformable furniture.

Functional dissatisfaction is another reason for discomfort and refers to the use of minimal space in our homes. To be functional, especially given that it is very small, a space must be used efficiently. An important role played is the furnishing space. Thus furniture placed around the perimeter and vertically, use changeable objects, furniture openings, suspended, or any other makeshift system that allows free movement of liberation and architectural space inside it.

Contrasts that cause visual shocks are generated by joining two opposite elements which act simultaneously or in succession on the same observer. Simultaneous contrasts are more violent than the successive intervals between events involving stimulants. To avoid shock use the contrast as a focus.

In the next article we will talk about other uncomfortable environmental sources: visual blur, spatial and geometrical confusion and claustrophobia.11
