Baseball: Rodriguez Under Police Custody
Francisco Rodriguez has been placed on the restricted list after Police claimed the Mets closer remains under their custody. Rodriguez was arrested after allegedly attacking his father-in-law at Citi Field. The closer was set to take part in court later on Thursday. Thus, he was replaced by Ryota Igarashi from Triple-A Buffalo, the right-handed reliever. Mets official Jeff Wilpon, who is also the chief operating officer, declared the team regret for Rodriguez behavior. “Ownership and the organization are very disappointed in Francisco’s inappropriate behavior and we take this matter very seriously.” The incident came after Mets game against Rockies on Wednesday, when the closer assaulted his father-in-law, but nobody knows where the fight started from.
Manager Jerry Manuel also declared: “I’m just kind of waiting to hear what the process is. I have no clue.” According to the New York Court the third-degree assault Rodriguez is charged with represents a Class A misdemeanor which refers to an intent to cause physical injury to another person or recklessly causing physical injury to someone, and might be punished by up to one year of prison. Mets short Jose Reyes also commented his team mate incident. “They told me about it when we were on the way to our house. He was arrested, I guess. He’s my teammate. He’s our closer, so I don’t want to see that kind of stuff happen. But I don’t know what the problem was with his family. I can’t talk about it too much,” while baseman David Wright heard about the news on television. “He’s a teammate, so we’re going to support him. Frankie’s been a great teammate for us, and we’re going to have his back.”
“Here’s part of the family here. You’ve got to realize that no one wants it to happen, but it happened, and now it’s a matter of making it right. If there’s anything that we can do in here for Frankie, I’m sure everybody’s willing to do it,” as the same Reyes ended: “I hope he comes out clean after what happened because we need him here.”
