British People Favor Prince William As Next King
It would seem that Prince William and Kate Middleton win the hearts of the people in UK, since two polls published on Saturday show that the Britons consider they should be the next king and queen of England, not Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
The poll made by ICM shows that 64 percent of the Britons want Prince William and Kate Middleton as the next in line to the throne, while the poll made by YouGov shows that William is perceived by the Britons as a better king than his father.
The public does not have too much saying in establishing the next in line to the throne of England, and the polls can only ascertain the approval rate and the respect the royal family enjoys.
In the YouGov poll, the percent of those who want the crown to pass to William is slightly higher than the percent of those who oppose it. Thus, 44 percent of the people want William as their next king, while 37 favor Charles.
It is possible that these results were positively influenced by the media coverage the young couple drew last week as they announced their engagement.
Another reason the people may choose William is that he is only 28 years old, whereas his father is 62, thereby William being expected to bring some vitality to the monarchy.
Last week Prince Charles said that Camilla should become queen if he were crowned as king. Charles and Camilla have been married for five years and at the time of marriage it was established that she would be Princess Consort.
Many people in Britain consider, according to other polls, that the wedding of William and Kate, scheduled for spring or summer next year, is good for the monarchy.
They fear, however, that the lavish event may not be appropriated at a time when the country’s economy is recovering from the economic crisis.
