Google and the Federal Trade Commission have submitted comments to the Staff Discussion Draft. The topic of discussion was the future of journalism in the age of the Internet.

Everybody knows and agrees that Internet is posing challenges and opportunities for publishers in the same time. For this, Google is working closely with web publishers in order to find together the best business solutions, so that the journalism to progress online and the future of news industry seems very optimistic.

Though, Google has found in the Staff Discussion Draft some point of view they don’t agree with, because the free expression gets hurt, and in the same time even the profession of journalism. One of these controversial points of view is related to the suggestion that the Congress enact a federal hot news doctrine.

Google appreciates the fact that the Federal Trade Commission is getting seriously involved in the matter and the efforts made for the news publishers to move forward in the digital era. Your comments will certainly help in encouraging these policy makers to promote creativity and not the protectionist barriers.11
