Germany elects its president Wednesday, the main candidates being Christian Wulff, premier of Lower Saxony, supported by Angela Merkel and Pastor Joachim Gauck, with fewer opportunities, despite the sympathy he enjoys among the Germans, Deutsche Welle reported.



CHRISTIAN WULFF

Christian Wulff Premier Lower Saxony is Chancellor Angela Merkel proposed candidate for this office with representative character.

In an interview in 2008 for a German newspaper, Wulff said that he doesn’t show a huge desire to achieve power. “In my opinion, is better that in politics,on the political scene, are acting not just individuals alpha, but many different individuals.I believe that the future belongs to those gentles, and we can  use these qualities in politics too thanks to those who approach things differently, “said Wulff.

Wulff has always claimed that doesn’t attempt to polarize the world, but rather to build bridges between people.

He was at one time considered as the only serious competitor in Merkel’s own Christian Democratic camps, which competition may not be the case in the context of his candidacy to a rather representative function.

At age of 14, Christian took care of her younger sister but also his mother was seriously ill. He joined the conservative Christian Democrats since he was at school,  and soon became president of the federal Christian Democratic Union of the students.

Recently, Wulff has attracted public attention through the designation for the first time as Minister in the Office of Federal Land,being remarked by a Muslim woman, a lawyer of Turkish origin.

If Wulff is elected as president, the 51 years old federal politician and his wife Bettina, aged 36, were the youngest presidential couple from Germany’s history. Among other possible features of the presidential couple are that Bettina Wulff bears a tattoo on the arm or that the young family would be first presidential one that would include children from a previous marriage.

JOACHIM GAUK         

Former militant for civil rights in the GDR, Gauck enjoys great popularity in Germany. However, his chances of occupying the office of President shall be reduced, notes Deutsche Welle.

Although he calls itself “liberal conservative left, Joachim Gauck Protestant theologian, born in 1940, has proved to be a strong personality. Captain’s son, Joachim child noted that it has agreed to be “German pioneer” or to join the youth organization of the GDR “Free German Youth.” In East Germany, was followed by Pastor Gauck Stasi secret police because of his beliefs.

In relation to effective strategy to cope with a dangerous regime, Gauck said: “Long before the appearance of any signs of resistance or opposition, measures must be taken that’s why parents are so important in the education received in childhood.

“Freedom was and is the subject Gauck is most concerned about, both political and spiritual perspective,” commented Deutsche Welle. In 1990, Gauck, father of five children, has contributed to democratization in the former GDR. As a member of a citizens movement “New Forum”, Gauck became head of the special verification activities of the former East German secret police, the Stasi. Gauck always supported the need for declassification of secret documents of the former political police.

Joachim Gauck considers the situation of the culture and the political class alarming in Germany. At the age of 70, he lived more than five decades in dictatorship, five in the National Socialist regime.

Joachim Gauck Berlin enjoys a great sympathy among Germans. If presidential elections were held directly Gauck had chances to become president, concluded the station.
