“There was a young lady of fashion / Who had oodles and oodles of passion. / To her lover she said / As they climbed into bed, / “Here’s one thing the bastards can’t ration.”-Before starting wondering to whom these words belong to I shall say that the author of these lines preferred to remain anonymous.

Tickling our senses with everything that surrounds us by means of taste, touch, smell, scent, sigh, vision, hearing, sound and the much invoked 6th sense, we are enabled to tell of and commune with the world around us, be it seen or unseen. By deciding to write about what for the moment is going to remain unseen to you, the words of a by now ‘ancient’ song crossed my mind. Do you happen to be familiar to “What is love? Baby don’t hurt me…don’t hurt me no more?” I guess most of you are familiar to these words…Later on these words led me to think about the practices of love and further on about aphrodisiacs coming from nature. Either weird or usual, these aphrodisiacs have surrounded us from ancient times up to nowadays.

Bathing in aphrodisiacs (eatsomethingsexy.com)

I could say now making use of a quite funny ad I happened to come across these days that like our parents did it, we do it today…we read, we eat, we run, we dance , we listen to music, we love and whatever else pleases us. Since time immemorial, both men and women have tried to spice up their life, either the one taking place on a horizontal level or on a vertical one, by making use of various delicious or rather weird dishes. By saying this I could even quote James Joyce who writing about desire said “Desire, for hire, would tire a shire.”

The history of humanity has been haunted by a number of foods coming from nature, followed by herbs, drinks and other unexpected supplements that have had a strong influence on the way men and women envisaged passion and pleasure and the way these two came to interfere with their daily lives. It could be said that nearly every civilization coming from the past and which later on became familiar to us had its own compendium of natural aphrodisiacs that certainly played an important role in the ‘propagation of species game’.

If I were asked to paraphrase the above mentioned facts I could say just like Charles Baudelaire said “my great, my only, my primitive passion”. And since I thus managed to bring together into the same phrase such words as ‘primitive’ and ‘passion’ I could as well start talking about the origins of the word ‘aphrodisiac’. It is said to have all started with the Greek Goddess carrying the name of Aphrodite, a goddess that is believed to have embodied the very notions of passion and sensuality. Following the legendary path opened by Aphrodite ancient Indians, Greeks, Egyptians and Greeks started making use of a whole myriad of natural aphrodisiacs meant to just spice up things and bring some flavor into their lives. Looking back in time and trying to deem the beginnings of these spicy ingredients meant to arouse primitive gestures in people, one would be able to discover that along the time people have determinedly believed in the capacity of these substances to heighten desire, performance and vivacity or as some would call it virility.

No need for anyone to blush and rapidly flutter his or her eyelashes since animals have done this in order to perpetuate their species from time immemorial and we have built our own way through the walls of love trying to perpetuate ours. Nature has been the womb of many secrets, secrets that by means of our inquisitive nature we managed to uncover. There may be some still waiting to be discovered yet most of them hold no secrets whatsoever to us. The ones we have already discovered somehow urged us to make the best use of them and thus enhance our passage through living. Various ancient cultures have made full use of aphrodisiacs including these ones in all sorts of special and unique rituals and traditions.

Aphrodisiacs (http://thegloss.com/sex-and-dating/cooking-with-love-and-aphrodisiacs/)

Apparently the saying stating that “love does pass through one’s stomach” comes to be truer than ever when going deeper into the properties being assigned to some fruits, vegetables or generally speaking to some dishes. Interested in finding out more about these miraculous fruits, fruits being used as aphrodisiacs for a long time now? Most of you would probably be surprised to find out that there are a whole lot of them and even more surprised when discovering that people vouched for their “passionate interference into their lives.” Do I see anyone smiling there? I have to admit that while encountering them in my research job I couldn’t hold my smile either. So, feel free to smile as much as you wish: “Here’s one thing the bastards can’t ration.”- meaning in bed, but as it all takes place on a website, ration does interfere…”On the page or on the sheet”…something more interesting you’ll never meet…though I guess it is all meant to come down to a greater passion…Is it?

I can’t vouch for something like this yet I can vouch for your smile. And while saying this I can hear you say “Bla bla lady; now tell me is there something I can do to make my woman feel like a queen?” Kind sir, yes there is…buy her a crown or buy yourself such “spicing ingredients” as the following ones: a basket full of figs, tomatoes, bananas, asparagus, avocado, basil, cardamom, celery, chocolate, chilli, figs, garlic, ginseng, mustard, liquorice, oysters, vanilla, accompanied by lots and lots of honey for your honey and roses. It looks like I just called the letters of the alphabet and listed some of the uncovered mysterious aphrodisiacs that have been used across the path of time.

A feast on natural aphrodisiacs is just about going to start. How about starting it all with some oysters? It is said that apart from the “special” effects they have on male’s virility, turning it into a real macho man if I am allowed to say so, oysters also manage to make a person feel relaxed and in other words procure one a state of well being. Rumor has it that Casanova himself included oysters in his menu consuming 50 live oysters on a daily basis. I do not know if this made him feel sick or relaxed and more virile, yet he is said to have had quite a number of women ready to please him. Romans are said to have made full use of them and by using them in large amounts managed to discover and account for their supposedly arousing properties.

Woman eating a chili pepper (womenshealthmag.com/sex-and-relationships/food-aphrodisiacs)

Going further on in this written feast of mine I shall now say something about one of perhaps the sweetest aphrodisiacs namely chocolate. Again Casanova is said to have been a real fan of chocolate. In the case of chocolate it all started with some chocolate beans having their origins in the South American rain forests. There have been numerous voices saying that cacao beans have been much cherished by the Mayan civilizations that used to call them “the food of the gods”. In case you did not know this by now it is said that even an Aztec emperor known under the name of Montezuma who is believed to have been really into women used to drink neither more nor less than just about 50 goblets of chocolate a day wishing to get better results in a place where ration holds no role, meaning in bed. It certainly enhances one’s mood and makes him feel better with himself as for the enhancement of performance you may try it yourself…much like Casanova tried it before you.

And if you feel like chocolate is just not enough to stir unknown passions in you then you may as well try to set you on fire with some chilli. I even managed to read somewhere that “chillis can fire you up in more ways than one.” Does this apply in your case too? Shall I call a fireman or perhaps the entire fire brigade to put out some of that fire? Rumor has it that all that fire comes from a chemical called capsaicin that is believed to make us experience high levels of passion and even flare up our internal engine. Apart from this it may as well harm us if ingested in large quantities so you’d better not feast on it.

How about some celery? I have to admit that even in my family there are some persons joking about it. Apart from being a healthy vegetable that can work many benefits for our bodies, celery is believed to have other properties as well. Did you know for example that the Romans used to dedicate this vegetable to Pluto the so called ‘god of sex’? They must have had their own reasons for doing this, don’t you think so?

Another ingredient on my list of ingredients believed to be able to arouse passionate reactions in one is cardamom. Well known by now for its aromatic taste, cardamom is also deemed to be a quite powerful aphrodisiac, that powerful that it is also claimed to be able to treat impotence. As for the cardamom oil, its scent is said to stimulate appetite and other things as well, the appetite for getting laid as some would probably end up saying.

Can anyone forget the image depicting the main actress from the movie entitled “Dangerous Beauty” eating a banana in quite a sensual manner? How about the horror that can be read on the faces of the other women who watch her? It all goes down to its phallic shape and other secrets hidden inside its creamy texture, secrets that make it a well known aphrodisiac. Does this make us some monkeys driven on the path of life by hidden sexual desires? This is just meant to be a question with no answer.

Aphrodisiac (http://female-libido-booster.com/strongest-female-aphrodisiac)

Do I hear anyone calling the letter A? A from asparagus or avocado…There was a time when asparagus used to be served to bridegrooms just to make sure that their wedding night will bring some sparks with it. The ritual included three courses of asparagus just to make sure that it would have the expected result. Just like it is said about wine, meaning that it is good for women when being drank by men the same thing accounts for asparagus. If we were to listen to what Quensal stated when talking about asparagus then we should leave it all to men: “asparagus turn men on but women off.” And by reading this I cannot hold myself from wondering whether this is the effect it used to have on brides in ancient Greece…I must be pretty curious…perhaps just too curious…

A…avocado…is the next aphrodisiac on my list. As James Merrill once said “Nor do I try to keep a garden, only / An avocado in a glass of water-“ It all probably started with the Aztecs who are said to have referred to the avocado tree using the term Ahuacuatl which translates into testicle tree. It is believed that the ancients managed to see some resemblance between the fruits hanging in the tree and some male testicles. Rumor has it that there was a time when Catholic priests used to forbid their churchgoers to eat avocado fruits. There are some people out there who are apparently able to deem something sexy in this fruit, something that is able to arouse one’s appetite for life and whatever this one brings with it, including here the much invoked passion. Apart from being healthy avocado fruits are apparently able to stir some other reactions in us as well.

And after dealing with avocado…I heard some basil proves to be equally useful when it comes to organizing some orgies. Apart from being believed to do wonders in the field of fertility, basil is also said to promote a state of well being and help stimulate circulation as well. Have you ever tried to see what reaction does the scent of basil trigger in the men close to you? Do they start roaring like a lion? I ask you this because I managed to read somewhere that the very scent of basil can drive a man wild…I really can’t vouch to this…because I never tried it…Yet I heard something pretty unexpected can happen if women used some powdered basil scattered on their breasts…Supposedly this can drive a man crazy. It sounds like a movie destined to those who have reached 18, does it?

Aphrodisiac Figs (dietmindspirit.org/2008/02/13/natural-aphrodisiacs-to-increase-your-sex-drive-just-in-time-for-valentines-day/)

Another legendary aphrodisiac is to be represented by truffles. As time has shown these ones have withstood the test of time and continue to be included on the list of some of the most prized culinary ingredients even nowadays. It must be because of what many identify as a unique musky aroma or because they happen to be rare, but truffles are said to work miracles when being used as an aphrodisiac. The story goes that at a certain moment in time a lover surrendered to the spell cast by truffles and “gorged himself to death on Alba truffles during the wedding feast.” So the lesson one needs to learn is that one should better rely upon himself that indulge in feasts making use of aphrodisiacs. Any other idea you happen to have?

How about some honey meant to sweeten up the rest of your existence on the planet called earth? Those who really do not believe in the notion of marriage and what comes afterwards probably frown while reading this. It is even said that life in a couple cannot consist only of milk and honey, yet the word ‘honeymoon’ includes this sweet sticky substance in it. No coincidence here since honey is believed to be a quite powerful aphrodisiac as well and used to be the main dish of newlyweds in ancient England. And as I suppose they got thirsty after eating all that honey they had to quench their thirst with lots and lots of mead, a beverage made of honey. All these amounts of honey, either fermented ones or raw ones were meant in fact to sweeten the drinker and the eater as well and bring with it more pleasure and passion as well. Hey waiter can you please bring some honey for my honey?

When thinking about the fact that there was a time when marriages used to be arranged, when the bridegrooms first encountered in the wedding day and they needed to do quite an effort to ‘like’ each other at times, it comes as no surprise that people used to make appeal to all sorts of ‘ingredients’ meant to bring romance and passion into the respective relationship. Rumor has it that in India a bowl of honey used to be paced next to the bed where newlyweds who had their marriages arranged by their parents were supposed to spend their first ‘passionate wedding night.’

Horizontal Life (greenme.ie/greenblog/2008/07/an-orgasm-a-day-keeps-the-doctor-away/)

And since I guess honey managed to sweeten you just enough (if there was any need)…I dare tempting you with some supposedly aphrodisiac pine nuts. Evidences come to prove that ever since medieval time pine nuts have been used to trigger sometimes hidden passions in one. They have been used in love potions since time immemorial as some would say. There is even a scholar called Galen who is said to have recommended eating 100 pine nuts before bed. I guess that would prove to be quite a complicated thing for us to do nowadays, unless one affords to lose his time and hope that some miraculous effect would dismount over him. Am I too harsh on this aphrodisiac? I guess I am just mean.

Talking about wickedness I shall now mention garlic, an herb about which Roman priestesses used to say that it can make “women fall in love and men powerful.” I have to admit that the aroma of this herb would keep me away from a man instead of making me wish to get closer to him. Therefore it could be said that garlic comes to be quite a “risky” aphrodisiac ingredient.

If not garlic, then onions for sure would work as an aphrodisiac. It may be just the prefect choice if you wish to “embalm” your lover in the pungent onion breath. Yet you have a very good reason for doing this, namely the desire to get into the mood for some love. Rumors say that being forbidden to ‘love’ Egyptian priests were not allowed to eat onions.

But since you have probably tasted all these so called aphrodisiacs by now without probably even being aware of their arousing properties, you may as well wish to taste others as well, this time weirder ones. How about tasting an aphrodisiac soup made of various parts of the tiger including here the penis, the liver, and the bones? This soup is supposed to awaken the dead, yet I’d have to say no. It doesn’t really seem that tasty to me. Would you try it? If you badly feel like tasting this soup then you have to be told that in countries like Taiwan and Korea in order to taste its aphrodisiac aroma you have to pay only 350 $. Quite expensive for a soup don’t you think so? Not when it makes you make love like a tiger, some would probably say. I don’t know if this comes to be such a great experience after all because as far as I could hear people talking, it is said that in the tiger’s case it all lasts only just about thirty seconds. Chinese people dare to try this soup even though in 1993 Chinese authorities are said to have forbidden the use of tiger and rhino parts because by that time these two animals had become endangered species.

Aromatherapy (altmedicinezone.com/aromatherapy/aromatherapy-as-a-natural-aphrodisiac/)

And just to go with that soup I dare offering you a drink made of snake’s blood. Quite tasty liquor that must be! If you are curious to find out how this beverage tastes like then you have to start planning a trip to Saigon. Rumor has it that there is a bar there where bartenders will serve you some cobra’s blood on request. Are you that kind of person who would prefer drinking this blood alone without spoiling its taste with that of some added liquor? If you are then you should think about providing some tip to the bartender, otherwise you are going to receive a mixture of the above mentioned ingredients.

If you’re really into aphrodisiacs and you claim you’ve had them all then most surely you have also tried the taste of some Spanish flies or some black ants. Even though it carries the name of Spanish fly it’s not a fly and is not Spanish but instead is just a beetle that is said to work deadly aphrodisiac results on the male population of this planet. My advice for you is to just read this and not try it at home because it is said to be literally deadly and because I do not think that one should go through such ordeals just to supposedly get more virile and get to be called a man who has have it all, meaning all the women he wished to have. I think that in this case what proves to be helpful for animals is not necessarily good for us too. Do you happen to be curious to find out where this green beetle is being used mostly? Rumor has it that it is most common in North Africa where it is being sold either as a spice or mixed with jam. There must be some really potent men out there. Yet I guess the authorities in Morocco had their own good reasons for declaring it illegal since the 1990s. Can it be because it made its own victims among men, without even allowing these ones to pride themselves with their recently acquiesced improved virility? Who knows!

How about trying some tasty grinded black ants? Now you shouldn’t worry about them being too dry to be swallowed because there were others who thought about fixing this problem before you. How did they manage to make them edible? Well the miraculous recipe includes some wine just to make sure that the ants sort of glide down the throat. But I guess this does not matter anymore for all those who desperately wish to conquer it all…in bed.

Sleeping beauty (spiceyssatinrifle.multiply.com/journal/item/290)

Among rather weird aphrodisiacs one should also not fail to mention the Durian fruit that has just been digested by the elephant coming out all veiled in elephant droppings. As some of my friends said when hearing about this I shall now say that “It must be really hard to get to a woman…Sometimes men need to go through shit to get to them”. At least this is what the above mentioned aphrodisiac delicacy tells us.

Do you happen to be interested in finding out some other weird aphrodisiac ingredients? There comes a rather strange love potion made from the dried skin of the lizard that comes to be mixed with some sweet wine. The Arabs and early Europeans are said to have done this hoping to achieve some miraculous results or some enhanced performance…Guess both of these two things were targeted when tasting all that rather weird mixture. And just as if this was not weird enough to you, then you may try drinking some urine, some baboon urine. And just to make sure that this one tastes better then you may feel like mixing it with some beer. This is how things apparently work in Zimbabwe. Things get somehow less tasty or worse when traveling to India. There, people are said to consider cow urine a beverage that works miracles as an aphrodisiac.

Going back to rather usual aphrodisiac veggies and fruits because I do not think there is anyone who wishes to taste urine and afterwards go kiss his partner just to see how performance and passion have come to be enhanced by that urine, I shall further on say something about what most of you would not expect to be brought into discussion when mentioning aphrodisiacs. How about changing the taste and trying some figs or some tomatoes or some almonds? As far as almonds are to be brought into discussion I have to admit that I was surprised to hear that they are deemed by some as some powerful aphrodisiacs. Rumor has it that even the great novelist Alexander Dumas used to believe in this aphrodisiac never failing to have his almond soup while dining with his mistresses.

The Much invoked passion (au-living.glam.com/articles/detail/aphrodisiacs_for_any_appetite)

As for the figs I have to admit I love them and this not because they happen to be considered aphrodisiacs but because I like how they taste. Cleopatra herself is said to have had a weakness for figs. I know not if she secretly hoped them to bring more passion in that ‘horizontal pas de deux’ as some used to refer to the act of making love or if she just happened to be craving for their taste. How about seeing a man naked in front of you eating a fig? Would you consider this arousing? Apparently there are some people out there who consider this to be one of the greatest erotic acts ever. I can’t vouch since I have never seen a man doing this and I never had the curiosity to ask one to perform this kind of a show in front of me. As for tomatoes, they are said to be the so called “apples of love” yet I personally haven’t discovered their aphrodisiac powers by now. Have you? I have to admit that I am still patiently waiting to be guided into this new side they choose to display…

The world of natural aphrodisiacs can be nevertheless surprising, funny and sometimes even weird and rather unusual. And just to end it all in a funny tone I shall now make use of a quote provided by Isabel Allende, a Chilean writer who said that “For women the best aphrodisiacs are words. The G-spot is in the ears. He who looks for it below there is wasting his time.” I know not if it is a waste of time or not, yet I guess you have plenty of time to figure it out yourself with all the above mentioned aphrodisiacs and so many words getting crowded here all together.
