Delhi Commonwealth Games bridge collapsed as doubts about the organizing has raised

A foot meant to sustain Commonwealth Games bridge collapsed on Tuesday in Delhi, India, to hurt 27 people around and raise doubts about the organization. Symbol of country’s economic power, too, the bridge was recently built in order to serve the audience during the big event that is about to come. Thus, the incident already issued doubt talks about pulling out the Games. This is what also Dani Samuels, Australian world champion at the discus throw who takes part to the Commonwealth Games, seemed concerned about the collapse, while official Jaipal Reddy, who manages the Urban Development Minister, said that the Games must take place, not to look that scare about the incident.

This comes after Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell declared that what happened scared the majority to add that the event which is scheduled to start on October 3, was seriously compromised by conditions at the Games village. Indian government is the most affected. After spending and investing hundreds of millions in the infrastructure, the incident compromised their work and put it into a very dark shape. “Fingers crossed, India may pull off a miracle. But it will have to be a miracle. No doubt about that,” is what Boria Majumdar, a sports historian, said. However, during the collapse nobody died, but most of the 27 hurt weren’t that far away for a tragic end though. Officials said that the poor organizing was almost foreseen by the many. Some of them found dirty swimming pools in which insect larvae floated above. “There have had some delegations staying there and they have been reporting constantly about the filth in the village,” Fennell added. Nevertheless, the organizers clearly declared that the Games won’t be put off.

But still, one consequence is already expected to happen. The delegation which assisted at the construction and was in charge with everything that needed to be done exits. Worries about stagnant puddles in construction also occurred. The construction cost the Indian government 6 billion dollars, but it seems that the value is 17 times bigger than the original estimates. The incident will be hardly forget by the people, according to Paranjoy Guha Thakurta who looks also concern about it, the more this occurred just two weeks before the Games have been scheduled to begin. “It’s just one of so many goof-ups. This will not do the government any good. When you have a big bash and benefits are minimal it sharpens and widens the inequalities in India. People notice,” he said.
