Copa Del Rey: Real, Barca Hit Five Each To Minnowers
Easy wins and a walk in the park for each Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey playoffs. Jose Mourinho had no reason to be nervous against minnowers Real Murcia whom the defeated 5-1. Real Madrid received though a red card, Arbeola being sent off in the 80th minute. However, the score was opened early in the fourth minute, Granero announcing an easy game at Santiago Bernabeu. Higuain also took advantage of a poor defending to make it 2-0 with an easy shot from the right. Then, Di Maria served Cristiano Ronaldo in the 75th minute with an outstanding cross as the Portuguese star only had to keep the foot the right way.
The reward would come for Real Murcia just seven minutes later. Pedro transformed a penalty that followed a handball inside the box. Benzema brough the déjà vu though. Rea Madrid was also given a penalty three minutes later, the French striker making 4-1. Xabi Alonso put his name on the scoreboard, as well. He scored in the last seconds from a free-kick from 20 metres or so, the shot being deflected by the wall, fooling in this way Murcia keeper. It ended 5-1, but Sergio Ramos refused to celebrate the great result, the defender claiming that there’s no reason to do that as long as they didn’t win anything yet. Indeed, Real performs very well in both the King’s Cup and the Spanish league where they are leaders, but no trophy has been raised yet over their heads.
Ramos would praise though new arrivals for the quick way they have accommodated in Madrid. Furthermore, being well-known that Karim Benzema doesn’t score that often, the defender showed his support for the Frenchman, who scored last night from penalty. As for the game, Mourinho looked pleased with the way the team played, his though being now whom they’ll play in the next round.
He couldn’t help himself from not commenting referee’s performance. The Portuguese let to be understood that he underestimated central’s job when invited everyone to take a look on referee’s statistics. Real boss revealed he usually analyze referee statistics. Next, they will face Sporting Gijon on Sunday, game which will also be treated very serious, according to the Portuguese manager. Real followed a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in Primera. Apart from this, the last news said that Atletico Madrid offered the Uruguay’s striker Diego Forlan to Real. The 31-year-old is said to be no longer desired by coach Quique Sanchez. Spanish newspaper Marca wrote that the player has been offered for 18 million euros, but Real Madrid didn’t give any answer to the issue. Former Manchester United striker scored the only two goals in last year’s Europa League final against Fulham, Forlan being the one to help the Spaniards raise the trophy over their heads.
FC Barcelona 5 – 1 AD Ceuta
Pep Guardiola’s side also finished with the same result last night’s Copa del Rey match against AD Ceuta. The Catalans look good also in the King’s Cup. They beat last bight AD Ceuta 5-1 at Camp Nou to reach the last of 16. It was an only one-way game. Barca dominated the entire match, providing a superb show to the delight of the crowd. Nolito opened the score in the 2nd minute and was the source for plenty of goal attempts. Milito made it 2-0 after tremendous stop by the same Nolito who simply laid the ball for Argentine’s shot. Milito would be sidelined for six weeks after damaging his thigh last night.
Things seemed to look more complicated after half an hour. Guzman cut down the two-goal deficit to one, scoring what will be the reward goal for minnowers Ceuta. He scored with a beauty shot that follow a long cross pass from the left that froze Barca defenders. However, things returned to normal when Pedro scored for 3-1 five minutes into the second half. Madrid has been held home by Universidad de Las Palmas who led 1-0 until the 73rd minute when Merida brought the one point. Real Union de Irun upset FC Seville, scoring the first goal in the 13th minute. Surprisingly or not, Seville thundered them with six goals in the game which brought the most goals of the night. Deportivo La Coruna beat Osasuna 2-1, while Real Zaragoza, who confronts the relegation zone, have been defeated by Real Betis 2-1. Finally, UD Almeria passed Real Socided 2-1 and Livante UD draw with Xerez CD.
Four other games in the last 32 are scheduled today. Getafe CF meets Portugalete, Valencia CF will host minnowers Logrones, Sporting Gijon faces RCD Mallorca and Hercules CF visit Malaga.11
