Women are the ones that are most concerned about this industry. Cosmetics are a vast market of products. They have been existing on the market ever since the time of Nefertiti. A lot of things changed ever since, but one thing remained: The women desire to provide a different look to them, to give a stronger personality or sometimes a less strong one, and all of this could be attained by merely applying some shades. The industry of cosmetics complies a lot; it includes skin care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail and toenail polish, eye makeup, hair colors, hair sprays, different deodorants, baby products, bath oils, salts, butters and everything that means taking care of you. A lot of such multinational companies entered in this industry in the twentieth century. The US Food and Drug Administration is the company that regulates the cosmetics release in the United States.
Lately concern was shown on the cosmetics ingredients. As this is a wide industry one must take proper care of ruling it and one must as well be very attentive to what the cosmetics corporations put in their new released products. As more and more companies see that this is an ever growing industry they release as many products as they can on the market hoping they will register big sales. That is one more reason for the American Food and Drug Administration to take proper look into what is being released.
What triggered their latest decision of testing each cosmetic that is to be released on the market from now one and put stricter rules on cosmetics is the fact that the latest tests made on creams, made them discover the fact that the skin lightening creams contained high amount of mercury. Mercury is a toxic metal that is illegal in the usage of the creams as it has a very strong power on your skin as it is used in lightening complexions and in diminishing freckles or even age spots.
As this was a broken law, this Commission believes that proper importance and attentiveness should be provided to the cosmetics producers. They should not be allowed of having their own set of rules and of controlling themselves. The thing with all this triggers the usage of cancer causing chemicals in baby shampoo, hormone disruptors in fragrances and as well lead in lipstick. As these are all bad components for your health, one does not know about their existence, as one believes that a cosmetics producer could not do anything to harm him or to his business. But as long as they were not so attentively kept under surveillance, they sometimes put everything in their products in order to have the needing result.
The new legislation Act according to which such measures about using certain very bad chemicals in the cosmetics component, comprises to phase out the ingredients that may lead to cancer, to birth defects or to any harm at all; to create a standard that will keep both the children and the adult population under good care; to provide to the workers that actually work with those chemicals and create that specific product, a full ingredient talk about the chemicals and their consequences, the increase of animal testing possibility and as well data sharing in order to avoid duplicative testing, provide the needing funding to the FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors in order that they will be able to have the needing resources to provide effective oversight and last but not least, the Act entitles that one should level the playing field so that the small companies can have the same place and the same competing opportunities.
The Rep. Schakowsky, member of the FDA was very angry when he stated that “Harmful chemicals have no place in the products we put on our bodies or on our children’s bodies. Our cosmetics
laws are woefully out of date—manufacturers aren’t even required to disclose all their ingredients on labels, leaving Americans unknowingly exposed to harmful mystery ingredients. This bill will finally protect those consumers.” Even though this harmful ingredient was found in body lotion, these new regulations will be applied to all of the cosmetic industry.
