International Airport of Domodedovo, Moscow, has been rocked on Monday at 16:30 p.m. local time by a powerful explosion that is reported to have killed at least 35 people, injuring more than 100 people in the blast.
It is supposed that the attack was orchestrated by a suicide bomber, or, according to Russia’s chief investigator, by a terrorist.
The airport is situated 40 km south-east of city center of Moscow, and is most of the time filled with foreign workers and tourists.
Police have enforced security precautions in the capital of the state and at the other airports in the country, BBC reports.
Early reports suggested that the blast hit the baggage-claim area of the hall of international arrivals, where a bomb seems to have been placed.
Dozens of ambulances arrived at the spot to tend to the wounded, while a lot of smoke could be seen in the area, and a smell of burning could be felt, according to the report of a Ria Novosti reporter.
Reports say that the main building of the airport is now being evacuated, and a wall has been broken down, so that the people may exist the building.
Though the real causes of the incident are not known yet, some believe that the Chechen rebels could be behind it.
This is the most serious terrorist attack in Moscow since March 2010, when 40 people were killed in the subway of the capital by the suicide attack of two women.
There are reports of carnage scenes on the sight, with people running with pieces of flash on stretchers.
Police are searching for three men considered responsible for the attacks, while many reports come about the members of police being aware of the attacks but being also unable to do anything substantial to stop it.
The police, Ria Novosti reports, had reports about an attack in Moscow this afternoon, and they even had a circle of three suspects they were chasing.
Even so, they could not prevent the tragic event, whose death toll is likely to raise in the coming hours.
The explosion comes at a time when Russian Federation is fighting the Caucaz Islamic terrorism. Experts say that the blasts are a way of showing the Russian authorities how weak they are when facing the threat of Chechen attacks, and consider it a defeat of the PM Vladimir Putin himself, whose professional background is related to the security agencies in Russia.
