Dominique Strauss-Kahn, head of the powerful International Monetary Fund, was denied bail by the Manhattan Criminal Court judge to whom he was presented with charges related to sexual molestation and assault which, if proven right, could send him in prison for the next seven decades.

The reason for denying him the possibility to make bail was that Judge Mellissa Jackson considered him a flight risk.

He was committed to New York’s Rikers Island jail complex, at the East River compound, where he is to wait until Friday, when he will appear in court again.

He is considered a high profile detainee, which means he would not receive any visit until Friday.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused on Sunday of having run after a 32-year-old housekeeper in the hallway of his $3,000-a-night suite in Sofitel hotel, New York, and then attempting to force himself on her.

He was schedule to leave for Europe the next day, where he was to meet the German Chancellor Angela Merkel for talks about the economic situation of European countries that have been confronted with difficulties over the last two years, such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal or Romania.

His arrest produced a lot of commotion on the financial markets all over the world, considering that he was the one directing multibillion-dollar loans that affect millions of people.

French political landscape also reacted to this news, because he was considered the most serious contender of Sarkozy in the presidential election in France.

Some went as far as to say that the IMF head was framed by someone connected to the political party that backs Sarkozy’s candidacy for a new term in office.

Political analysts in France consider that if the accusations are proven right he doesn’t stand any chance for the elections.
