Great shaped and a real threat for the US Open, Andy Murray beat Roger Federer at Rogers Cup in Toronto with 7-5, 7-5 to take finally his first title of the year and to become in the same time the first world’s number two Britain in the ATP. The 23-year-old Scott had a great week at the North American tournament, this passing in his way to the final world number one Rafa Nadal, whom Murray defeated in the semi final in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. However, well-rested Federer, who came after a long break, couldn’t take the title too after he has beaten Berdych and Djokovic on his road to the final.

“It was one of the best weeks I’ve had. Winning a tournament is always great, but it’s the first time I beat Roger and Rafa in the same tournament, which is probably the most pleasing thing. And I didn’t drop a set against either of them. It’s very satisfying. I mean, it doesn’t happen that often for anyone.” Murray didn’t show plenty of enthusiasm, this being aware of the easy way things can change in tennis in short period of time. “I know things can change in a very short space of time but obviously I feel good after this week. (The US Open has) always been a tournament I love playing, so hopefully I can do well there … I want to win (a grand slam) … I believe I’m good enough to but it’s a very, very difficult thing to do. It’s a tough era but it’s also something that is exciting and challenging, and that’s why I think if you can do it, it makes it a much, much greater achievement.”

Federer, who lost seven times to the Scott in 12 meetings, admitted it was pretty hard for him to run behind the score in order to win the match, but revealed he’s feeling well and now looks forward to repeat – at least – the same performance at the US Open which will being at the end of this month. “Today was another tough match physically with the breaks, coming back, the breaks, coming back, and with all the physical strain I had to go through this week. It was particularly hard being down 0-3, running behind the score, and still losing the first set. Not coming through there obviously was a bit of a blow, and then the rain delays completely shut it down for me to get any kind of rhythm. It was played on a couple points here and there, and it didn’t even feel like the end of the match. Just all of a sudden it was all over. So it was just a touch disappointing. I thought he played well. He was aggressive. He was taking the ball early. He wasn’t giving me much, and he clutch served at the very end when he had to, and he deserved the victory.”
