Former Egyptian President Temporarily Arrested For Fraud

Hosni Mubarak, former president of Egypt, was taken into custody for 15 days on Wednesday as the country’s prosecutor decided to place him under temporary arrest pending investigations for corruption charges.


According to state television, two sons of Mubarak, Gamal, who was expected to become the heir apparent and take power from his father, and Alaa, were also detained, being transferred to Cairo, where they are to stay at Tora prison.

It is reported that the former president is being interrogated in a resort hospital at Sharm el Sheikh.

It is also said that a day before he had been committed to this hospital after suffering a heart attack as a result of the first round of questioning.

Last Friday the angry mobs demanded in the Tahrer Square that the family of Mubarak and many of his collaborators be placed under accusation for having used state funds for private purposes.

The people doubt the benevolence of the current leaders of the country, given that the head of the military council that leads now the affairs in a transient epoch toward democracy spent many years as Mubarak’s defense minister.

They accuse the military council members of shielding the former president and allowing him and his family to cover their tracks.

It is for this reason that the authorities began investigating Mubarak, as a response to the accusations made by the people.

In an audio recording released on Sunday, former president Mubarak denied accusations of fraud. The recording increased the anger of the people who were asking for his punishment.
