Former president of Israel Moshe Katsav was sentenced to seven years in prison on Tuesday by a district court in Tel Aviv, and to two more years of probation and a 100,000 Israeli shekel payment to Aleph, one of the women who sued him.

The judges George Karra, Judith Shevach and Miriam Sokolov decided that he should start serving his term within 45 days, that is starting with May 8.

Judith Shevach expressed the opinion, supported by a minority, that the ex-President’s punishment should be reduced to four years.

The Jerusalem Post reports that upon hearing the sentence the president broke down in tears and said he was innocent and that his conviction was a terrible mistake as the time would show in the future. “The lie won today, you will see,” he added.

In the argument of the sentence, the judges said that the victims were submitted to a long-drawn-on sexual harassment, and that this is indicative of sexually abusive patterns worthy of meeting harsh punishment.

One of the judges blamed the delay of indictment on the fact that the defendant was executing very highly ranked offices, which kept him away from the judicial stand.

As for the fact that he was the president of Israel that only made things worse, given that in Israel the president is expected to have a blameless conduct.

With this sentence a two-year process and five years of disputes come to an end after the news had surfaced five years ago that the former president was being blackmailed by former employees, which led to investigations and finally to the things that constituted the reasons for the sentence today.

In 2007, Katsav resigned his office, in the middle of this flux of accusations, and has claimed to be innocent ever since.

Israeli State Procurator said on Tuesday that the sentence is a way of showing the Israeli people that they can trust their judicial system.
