Fruit Pulp Blamed for the US Typhoid Cases

What is the typhoid that people have been talking about recently? It is actually a fever that has taken over some people from California and Nevada and it seems that none actually knows the exact thing that caused it.

The typhoid fever, as well known as salmonella exists all over the world and it is usually transmitted through the food or water that is contaminated with the feces of an already infected person. It is characterized by a progressive fever that will get up to 40 degrees Celsius, profuse sweating, gastroenteritis, non bloody diarrhea or even some rash.

Trying to figure out the causes that lead to this to happen, people have seized that a frozen tropical fruit pulp, from which smoothies are made from, may have triggered the appearance of this disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, five of those people drank smoothies or milkshakes that contained that fruit – mamey ( ma-MAY).

Four of those people bought the pulp sold by Goya Foods Inc of Secaucus, New Jersey. This is a fruit that is originated from Central and South America. Most of us know it by the name of zapote or sapote.

This Wednesday, according to the Food and Drug Administration, that took a sample to analyze, the packages with the frozen pulp; it was proved that it actually contained the bacteria that caused the typhoid appearance. The victims are between 4 to 31 years old.

The thing with this disease is that it is actually life threatening and it has become more and more rare in the United States lately, yearly being just around 400 registered cases. It was as well, demonstrated that the vast majority of those that have it, catch it while traveling.

In the last 12 years, there were registered three food connected typhoid, such as mamey pulp as well, various times; the Gulf Coast oysters – in Texas in 2006 registered and as well a Maryland restaurant.

While the doctors cannot be sure since when a person has this disease, they explain that it can take between three days to eight weeks for someone that has been infected, to actually start developing symptoms.
