Green Food Choice May Not Be So Green
Have you ever thought that the food you’re eating is not healthy at all? That contains trails of pesticides and other hundreads of chemicals, that is not nutritious and won’t do you any good?
I’m sure you did. So you did what any other people would do: switch to the so-called green food, the organic one which claims not only will taste 10 times better, but it will actually be benefic to your body, “heal” you from inside, boosting you with energy, vitamins and minerals.
Hm, not really. Supposingly, if everyone dropped “unhealthy food” and would only consume vegan food like fruits and vegetables, then the reduction in greenhouse emissions for the whole of food consumption would be around 7%. The widespread of vegetariams, however, would have even less impact, while it appears that organic food production actually leads to the increasing of greenhouse gas emissions.
Agriculture of any type, whether it’s green or non-organic, vegan or non-vegan, produces gas emissions and increseas the carbon footprint. Also, the cultivation of soil for whatever purpose, from growing crops to raising livestock is the main source of gas emissions in the food industry, not fertiliser production nor agricultural energy requirements.
Under these circumstances, we all seem forced to deal with a cruel reality – the fact that, no matter how much we try, sometimes, by trying to make things right, we will only learn how to destroy them faster. And that green doesn’t always mean healthier or better for the environment.11
