Being over-weighted is a common problem that most of women in America deal with. However, most of them do not give it any though and are not concerned of this issue, nor do they do anything about it, unless a serious disease happens to them. This is the time when they think of the fact that proper measures should be taken and they cannot just continue living like that.

This is the same case of Mary Writesel. Despite of the fact that she was dealing with obesity for many years she did not took proper measures until she was diagnosed with diabetes. This is when she decided to have a weight reduction surgery.

After having left the hospital, about a year ago, her diabetes was no longer so sizeable, her high blood pressure and her high cholesterol level decreased. However, doctors did not bear it in mind at that time, but after an entire year of diabetes free, they are more prone to take it into account.

Despite of the fact that not all the diabetics people that are overweight and do the weight reduction surgery, have the same luck, studies have shown that it happens more and more often, this is why doctors are actually taking notice of it.

The 55 year old woman that is now diabetes free, agreed to donate a part of her fat in order for scientists from Norfolk’s Eastern Virginia Medical School. They intend to discover the real reason why this is happening after such a surgery takes place. At first it was thought that it is because of the weight loss, but they as well tend to believe that something else may be hiding behind this obvious reason. Therefore, they decided to take some fat tissue samples from different body types to see the connectivity that leads to this.

The researchers from EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center concentrated mainly on the fat that came from the belly, as it is the one that surrounds the internal organs and most often the cause for diabetes type II. These are people that are apple shaped. The pear shaped people tan to have this fat in their hips, thighs and buttocks area. They are focusing their research on the enzyme that is called lypoxygenase. It is the one that causes the inflammation which leads to the damage of blood vessels.

There is a swell a difference of reaction between patients that have gastric bypass and those that have lap – band surgery. This difference was discovered by Dr. Jerry Nadler. The gastric bypass is a procedure that restricts the stomach so that the food bypasses a part of the intestine; while the lap band is less invasive, and just makes the stomach be smaller.

According to a study, the enzymes in the blood stream changes after having suffered the gastric bypass surgery. This study was performed on a number of 40 subjects, both diabetics as well as non diabetics. Half the patients were diabetics and half not. Half of them from each category suffered the bypass surgery and the other half from each category suffered the lap – band procedure. In June, this year the first results of this study were released.

Anyhow, there are more to be done and discovered, therefore, Dr. Stepehen Wohlgemuth that is widely known for doing weight reduction for a decade now, works together with these researchers, by collecting fat tissue from his patients. He agrees with the fact that many of his patients that suffered the gastric bypass operation, dealt with no diabetes problem, afterward.

According to a study published in 2004, out of 22,000 people that suffered from type II diabetes, 70 percentages had the disease go into remission after the bypass surgery. It had so good results as some f the doctors recommend this surgery even to those patients that are not in a very big need of losing weight.

Anyhow, just like in any case, there are some people that just do not agree with surgery to get rid of this internal disease. They continue believing that people could get rid of diabetes as well through exercise, diet and medication. They as well believe, that through surgery, people risk the problem of regaining weight again and as well a reappearance of diabetes. This is the reason, before making the surgery; the insurance companies require that people have a certain weight and some health complications, so that the surgery can be covered.

Anyhow, making the surgery you have to get well prepared so that it has the desired effects. Writesel, was on high blood pressure medication since the age of nineteen years old. Until she reached the fifty years of age, the cholesterol was as high as she had to add medication for this treatment. With the medication and the diabetes being born, she came to have as much as 250 pounds.

Before having the bypass surgery she started getting interested into a proper diet to get to a normal weight so that she may not suffer complications. Until the surgery she got to 238 pounds and her cholesterol was beginning to decrease. The week before the surgery was the last week when she took the diabetes medications. A year later she is now sixty pounds less and intends to lose another thirty.
