Shelf life of products is shorter if you care for sunlight. Creams, but also makeup products that change their texture, color or odor after exposure to heat should be discarded. Otherwise, they can harm your skin.

Like foods, cosmetics are within warranty. In addition, improper storage conditions can damage the cosmetics before the exhausting period of validity. The consequences of using expired products can be quite serious: contact dermatitis and sunburn if they are creams or lipsticks, and irritation or conjunctivitis, if we are talking about makeup and mascara.

Most cosmetics are photosensitive, i.e. they may be damaged by exposure to light. And humidity has the same effect. Therefore, it is ideal to store all cosmetic products and makeup products in a special cupboard, where they are protected light and moisture.

If the product packaging does not specify other information on storage, it can be kept at the room temperature. In addition, it is mandatory to use the original packaging of cosmetics directly after use, close perfectly the container to prevent oxidation and evaporation of water by prolonged exposure to room air.

Exposure to sun and heat damages any cosmetic or makeup product. It changes the chemical formula; it can evaporate water and separate oil composition contained by other ingredients. According to specialists, the effect of these changes on the skin is harmful because it does not satisfy the optimal role and, moreover, heat favors the emergence of a culture medium for bacteria.

Skin infections, the bacteria contamination, and sunburn are some risks of using products exposed to sunlight because they do not offer UV protection. Therefore, it is advisable not to leave the cosmetics and makeup kit in the car during hot summer days or to wear such items in your bag at all times. Moreover, at the beach you should only take lotions and sprays with sunscreen protection and a towel, in order to cover the product, so that it is not directly exposed to sun light. Moreover, even if you use a product in perfect condition, the action of direct exposure of skin to sunlight can lead to allergies and irritations, so cleansing is indicated when you spend time at the beach.

Cosmetic manufacturers say that, during periods of hot temperatures, some cosmetics can be kept in the refrigerator. It is generally about creams and lotions, but also about some makeup products.

But other products “suffer” when stored at too low temperatures and in an environment that can be wet, such as the refrigerator. For example, powder makeup should be always kept away from light and moisture, but never in the refrigerator, because it can easily deteriorate due to moisture. In contrast, organic creams, more sensitive to high temperatures and lower shelf life, are safe, if they are stored in the fridge.

Many international studies confirm that women do not look on the term when they purchase cosmetics and get to use them frequently after they have exceeded the warranty period. Moreover, this contributes to the fact that, over time, the expiry date on the package seems to vanish. In these cases, it is useful to have a little guide on how long your cosmetics are safe to be used.

Specialists say that mascara can be used within six months after opening, eyeliners can last for eight months, foundation and lipstick are valid for almost one year, eye shadows last for two years, as well as blushers.
