Imagine that you are watching your home’s burglary in real time.

This is what happened to Vince Hunter from Dallas last week when he and his wife were visiting their family in Connecticut 1,500 miles away from home. He is using an iPhone application called iCam which costs 4.99 dollars, and while he was at the gas station the app sent Hunter a text message that the motion detectors in his house had been activated. He was able to watch live videos captured by the webcams he previously installed around his home and in the house using the phone.  He saw some guys in the house and realized that he spotted them exactly when they broke the glass so he decided to call 911 and to notify the security company, too. He saw them trying to break the tempered glass with bricks over and over again and finally succeeding. Hunter continued to watch and he saw the police arriving a few minutes later with the guns in their hands, but they missed the burglars which had already taken off scared away by the sound of the home’s alarm system.

Hunter’s home had been broken into before, so they invested some money into a new security system with three different cameras which allow Hunter to see images of his house from any computer. And more, with the help of the iCam app for his iPhone he can see them even if he is not around a computer. Hunter watched as the robbers ran away before stealing anything, but his neighbor was not that lucky and the police officers  believe the burglars have visited them before attempting to rob the Hunter residence. The videos from Hunter’s iPhone will help police find the thieves. There are also some witnesses that say they have seen a car take off really quickly. Hunter says that he will do anything possible to help police find the burglars because there were many robbing in the neighborhood in the last period and he really hopes that the images from his phone will help. Beside using your iPhone to protect your home which keeps the computer blocked in order for the owner to be able to use the webcams, you can use the Dropcam Wi-Fi security camera.

All that you need in order to be able to use the system is Wi-Fi to monitor your house from anywhere in the world, using your computer or mobile device. The motion detected causes alerts which are sent to the owner via text or e-mail and the video can be watched from the phone. One disadvantage of these security systems is that they sometimes trigger false alerts set off by roaming cats or dogs. But many of the programs include an image of what the camera sees in the alert text or e-mail so that you can decide if there is need to call the police or not.
