Kaymer claims third season title to go fourth in the rankings

Martin Kaymer claimed the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, too following the previous two successes that include the US PGA Championship, one that he won in August, and the KLM Open which he has taken in Holland one month ago. Kaymer was also part of a memorable performance during the Ryder Cup as the Europeans edged United States two weeks ago. The 25-year-old youngster is now fourth in the world rankings and is already a real danger for any tour. He couldn’t believe himself he has won the ADL trophy. Now, he also became the first 12th player to top the overall rankings since these were introduced in 1986.

“People ask me why is it happening, but I’m surprised as well. I was never expecting it and I don’t really have an answer for why I am playing so well at the moment. I’ve always played solid golf and my short game has improved big time the last two years and especially the last few months. Everybody here can hit the ball, everybody. But at the end of the day you have to make the putts – it’s all about the putting,” the German, who is now world’s hottest player, said. However, the young golfer could yet make a stop further and take Westwood’s the top spot. None of Westwood or Tiger Woods is expected to take place at any of October’s tours, thing which guarantees Westwood’s first place to overtake Woods, who played this season under threat of losing the leadership following personal life troubles and a divorce. All of the three Westwood, Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson succeeded to get closer to top as the first one seemed to do it better. He is expected now to overcome Woods at the end of the month.

Nevertheless, the Martin Kaymer does not see himself as the best of the moment. This would acknowledge Lee Westwood may be the first at the minute. “The way he (Westwood) played with me last week was absolutely amazing. He played so solidly. His putting was good, chipping… the entire game was fantastic. I really see him as a role model,” said the German of Westwood whom he partnered for two matches at Celtic Manor. Kaymer took advantage of Westwood’s decision to take about a month off due to a muscle injury. Meanwhile, defending champion Simon Dyson would only come fifth, this closing with a 66. The German continued to look very enthusiast though. “It was always one of my dreams to win here at St. Andrews. I can still remember my first day I came out here when I was an amateur and walking down the first hole, walking over the bridge, all of those things, they felt very special to me. So it was very, very special for me to win here today, in the Home of Golf.”
