Days after Nelly Furtado decided to confess she received money after performing for Gaddafi’s family back in 2007, other artists decided to follow her example.
Nelly Furtado announced on Monday that she plans on donating the sum of $1 million, money she received for her 45 minutes performance for the Gaddafi family during an event that took place in Italy about four years ago. The Canadian singer made the announcement on her Twitter account, although it is yet unknown to which charity the money are going to be given. However, it seems that Nelly Furtado’s decision has determined other stars to also take action in dissociating themselves from the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his family, having under consideration also the public pressure on them, that has been increased in the past days.
Beyonce and Mariah Carey performed during a party held for the New Year’s Eve. And there is no wonder that the singers are willing to clean their image, as in the past days different reports indicated that many stars earned huge sums of money for brief appearances at parties hosted by the Gaddafi family members. Actually, fans and media aimed though this publicity to make them give the money back, or maybe donate them to different charities, as Nelly Furtado decided. But, Beyonce claims she had already donated the money she earned for her performance at the party hosted on the Caribbean island of St. Barts on New Year’s Eve, event held in 2009. The star claims she gave the money away to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
So, in a statement posted on her website, Beyonce wanted to also dissociate herself from the Libyan leader. “Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi (Gaddafi) family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause,” the singer’s statement said according to Reuters. So, Beyonce claims she gave the money away to charity, Nelly Furtado promised to do so, but what about others? Well, Mariah Carey was the next star who decided to share the fact that she felt embarrassed to have received money for her performances at Gaddafi’s events, but she made no mentions about donating the money to charity.
“At the time, Libya was not in the news…Now it’s become an issue in hindsight, which is sort of ridiculous,” the singer said in a statement posted on her website according to People magazine, also adding that she will make a donation, but it seems that not the sum of money she got for her performance at the party, but the ones she will earn from her new song “Save the Day.” The star did not mention to which charity the money are going to be given away. But, in her statement Mariah Carey also wanted to dissociate herself from the dictator and his family, as she claimed she was “naive” and had no idea who the people for whom she performed were. And Mariah also added that this should be a lesson for all artists to be more aware when it comes to the contracts they accept and the events they attend. However, what the star wanted to share is that she definitely regrets performing at the party held by Moammar Gadhafi’s sons and now she wants to raise awareness about human-rights issues. The star and her husband, Nick Cannon, started a foundation with this purpose. The two going to welcome their twins, as they will be parents for the first time.
Anyway, other artists that are known to have had such performances are expected to react. Usher and 50 Cent are just two of them.
