Memphis discrimination against gays
A law project that would ban discrimination against gays issued in Memphis is subject to criticism because some say the ordinance itself is discriminatory against people who oppose homosexuality because of their religious beliefs, like the Christians.
Bellevue Baptist Church Pastor Steven Gaines argues that Christians too have the right to follow their religious beliefs, even though they are against homosexuality. The amendment is prohibiting the city to discriminate people based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and is referring mainly to the employers that might act unfair to different categories of people. Janis Fullilove, City Council representative who sponsored the proposal at the request of Tennessee Equality Project, a gay rights organization, declares that everyone deserves the right to be protected at their workplace and should be able to work without fear of losing their jobs over something that has nothing to do with their performance.

At this point the Memphis law allows the employer to fire someone because he or she is gay or lesbian or transgender. Another City Council representative, Barbara Swearengen Ware, says that the ordinance is unnecessary because there are no questions during an interview or training that request the participants to declare their sexual orientation. There are many concerns related to this subject on both sides, any many people wonder what will happen if biological men start using women’s bathrooms.
