Crime news have always been amongst the most popular news and they seem to attract people in very strange ways. Is not about morbidity or anything, but they appeal to people from different reasons.
For that, let’s see the 10 most famous crime news that have appeared in the last year.
Amy Bishop was convicted in the case of the murder of three professors at the University of Alabama on the 12th of February, 2010. Although at first she was not charged with the murders, she eventually became the prime suspect, given her weird past. Some of you may know that she was the one to kill her brother back in 1986, but at the time the murder was said to have been by accident. Then, in 1993 she was questioned in the case of Dr. Paul Rosenberg who had received two pipe bombs.
Amy Bishop had a Ph.D. in Genetics after studying at Harvard University and Dr. Paul Rosenberg is said to have given her some bad reviews on her works. She denied all allegations and was not charged, but things turned out to be exactly as it was thought: she was to blame for both her brother’s death and for placing pipe bombs at Dr. Paul Rosenberg’ house.
In what concerns the incident on the 12th of February, it seems that the woman opened fired after a meeting with 12 other people, killing three of them and injuring several more. In state of Alabama she would have faced the death penalty for this crime. Furthermore, rumor has it that the woman had even “booby trapped the science building with a ‘herpes bomb’” after she worked with the virus in order to complete her post-doctoral studies. But nothing came out of the rumor, as the police have not found any evidence on it.
Yeardley Love was a student at the University of Virginia and she was in the women’s lacrosse team. As a member of the UVA women’s lacrosse team, the Cavaliers, Love scored her first goal in her first game, playing against Virginia Tech and she started in 9 of her 16 games in 2009 and in 3 of her 15 games in 2010.
It seems that she and her boyfriend, George Huguely V, a fearsome attacker on the school’s men lacrosse team, were fighting over some personal stuff. And on the 3rd of May, the woman was found dead in her Charlottesville apartment. After receiving a phone call from her room mate, Love was found face down on the floor, unresponsive, and she was soon pronounced dead. The next day, her boyfriend, who lived close to her apartment, was charged with Love’s murder.
According to his statement, after they fought for a couple of minutes, he “shook Love, and her head repeatedly hit the wall.” Moreover, he went on saying that it was only an accident and that he did not mean to kill her. However, the incident made people think more about domestic violence and a preliminary hearing in Huguely’s case is planned for this year.
On the 18th of February, 2010, a man called Andrew Joseph Stack plunged with his airplane in a building housing IRS offices, killing himself and another person. It seems that the man had a very well thought-out plan and what he wanted to do is make some sort of a statement against the United States Government.
So, on the morning of 18th of February, he set on fire his $230,000 house and then he got in his single-engine Piper Dakota airplane, which took off at about 9:45 in the morning. What he did was to plunge into Echelon I, a building containing offices for 190 IRS employees, after he left a suicide note on his website. According to authorities, the incident was not a terrorist attack.
However, as some say, if the man who was flying the had been Muslim or something, the incident would have surely been named a terrorist attack. Furthermore, according to Daily Kos website, “obviously Stack was not a mentally healthy person, and he was embittered at capitalism, including crony capitalism, and health insurance companies and the government.” It seems that the man had a statement to make and he decided that this was the best way to do it.
8 weeks, that’s the time it took for 17 people to die and 90 more to be injured in a series of stabbings that happened in China starting March 2010. Six attacks were made on school children, leaving 17 of them dead and it seems that those attacks were carried out by mature men who had some mental issues.
Furthermore, given the little access to mental health care people have in the Republic of China, the attacks, although horrible, have not taken people by surprise. A study of four Chinese provinces found that among individuals with a diagnosable mental illness, just 5% had seen a mental-health professional, which is inadmissible.
The bad thing about all this is that people in China are not allowed to have more than one child, according to the Government’s one-child policy, and imagine what the pain must have been for families to lose their only child in such stupid stabbing attacks. As said, people and authorities blame mental health problems for these murders.
Elizabeth Smart was 14 years old back in 2002 when she was kidnapped by a man known by his name Brian David Mitchell and his companion, Wanda Ileen Barzee. The little girl was found 9 months later near her home. Smart’s story was the theme of a feature film and a book, that’s how mediated the case was.
According to statements, Elizabeth was sleeping in the same room with one of her sisters and sometime early on the 5th of June, 2002 she was abducted from her bed by these man and woman. Her sister stated that the man had a knife and he threatened her if she told anybody. After 9 months, Elizabeth reappeared and the man and woman were sent to trial. Still, nothing was done about the case until 2010, because it seems that the man was not able to be trialed because he suffered from mental issues like paranoid illusions.
However, given that the now 23-year old woman was there to testify against the people who abducted her, along with several other witnesses, the two were convicted, with the jury not taking into account their mental health. It seems that during the time she was kept captive, Elizabeth has went through horrible things like being forced to drink huge amounts of alcohol and the man even raped her several times.
