Mumbai Pakistani Bomber's Death Sentence Upheld In High Court

Bombay High Court reaffirmed on Monday the death sentence against the only survivor of the Mumbai attack in 2008 that claimed the lives of 166 people, holding the financial center hostage for three days.

Ajmal Amir Kasab, 24, of Pakistani origin, can appeal India’s Supreme Court within 30 days, and in case the appeal is rejected, which is very much likely in his situation, he can appeal the President of India for pardon. Otherwise, he could be hanged.

The court’s case against Kasab showed that he used “brutality and perversity,” making it impossible for the judges to decide in favor of imprisonment.

They upheld the previous sentence because, in their own words, he killed innocent people without mercy. Some of the people in Mumbai have manifested with joy at the announcement, chanting that the terrorist must die.

Two Indian citizens, previously accused of conspiring with him to commit murder, were released because of insufficient evidence, based mainly on witnesses.

Kasab was sentenced to death last May by an anti-terrorism court, on five counts, among which conspiracy to commit murder and waging war against the nation.

He was not in court because of security concerns, but was able to hear the sentence via a video link.

It is said that Kasab has never showed any remorse for what he did. Moreover, he felt sorry he did not make it in time to the city’s main rail station to cause more damage.

His defense tried at a certain point to make a case out of arguing that their client was mentally unstable and consequently was not to be charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
