Science has solved many mysteries

Over the course of history there have been numerous mysteries which could not have been solved without the aid of science. In what follows I am going to present you the biggest mysteries solved by science.

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus which is located near Athens, Greece, was built in the 4th century BC. It is one of the best preserved theatres, and the thing that makes is stand out the most, is its acoustics. Even when it was built the theater had great acoustics, as anyone from the audience, no matter the location could have heard with ease what the actors were saying. For many years the great acoustics was a source of mystery. Some said that the sounds were carried by the winds, but it seems, that the natural elements had nothing to do with it. The reason for the great acoustics of the theatre was the limestone material which was placed on the seats.

If you have heard about the Crystal Skulls, then you have probably seen the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It seems that there are many collectors of skulls made out of crystal, who swear that they were created by the Mayans, and many other similar civilizations. The skulls were placed in museums, but it was later revealed that they were fakes. They were made out of crystal, but there was a problem with them: the eye sockets were made with a wheeled instrument, and the Aztecs have never used the wheel. Since the discovery most of the museums from the world have removed the skulls from their exhibition.

On May 19, 1780 the sky went dark over New England and over various states from Canada. As you might have expected, giving the knowledge of the people from that period, they stated that God was responsible for it. The event was called New England’s Dark Day, and people still believe that there was a supernatural reason for the sudden darkness. 230 years later, researchers from the University of Missouri have discovered that the darkness was caused by massive wildfires which took place in Canada. The reason why the people might have believed that God was responsible for the event was because the animals acted in a very strange manner, you know, like they usually do when such an even occurs.

I am certain that you are familiar with the Face on Mars, that stone structure which resembles a human face. Because of it, many people believe that Mars was once inhabited by aliens. Even if the theory would have been true, why would have the aliens created a human face on the planet in the first place? I think that they would have created their face, not a human one. Anyway, in 2003, the European Space Agency launched the Mars Express in order to take 3D scans of the face. The results showed that the formation is actually a structure made out of rocks, which no longer has the face-like features.

One of the most amazing sea creatures is the barreleye fish. It has tubular eyes which can collect the light at very deep depths. The creature has puzzled the scientific world for decades, as the scientists could not understand how the fish was able to capture the prey if he could only look upwards. The holes from the front of the fish are not its eyes, but the two green domes are. It seems that the fish can move its eyes inside those domes without any problems, and this it can look down, in front, and so on.

Checkers is one of the most popular board games in the world as millions of people are playing it. In case you did not know, there are 500 billion possible moves. Marion Tinsley who is considered to be the best checkers player in the world has managed to beat numerous computers at the game. In 2007 the software Chinook was developed, and it has the capacity of playing the game at perfection. A match between Chinook and the best human player can only end in a draw, as long as the player does not make a mistake, as the computer surely will not do it.

When the Titanic sank, the body of a dead baby was found in the water. The child could not be identified, and as a result he was buried in Nova Scotia. On its tombstone the words “The Unknown Child” were placed. The researchers from the Lakeland University in Ontario received permission to exhume the body. They consulted the passenger list from the Titanic, and they realized that four names could have been the baby. They identified that the baby was Sidney Goodwin, by using his DNA samples, and DNA samples from one surviving relative. He was the sixth child of Fred and Augusta Goodwin from Fulham, England, and they were going to New York when the ship sank. All members of the family died.

A hammerhead shark was born in 2001 at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska and there were three potential mothers in the same tank. The problem was that all of them were in captivity for three years, and as a result they could have not mated. Even if they would have mated prior to being caught, the mother would have given birth to the baby sooner than that. It has been said that the sharks can perform parthenogenesis, which is the process of reproducing asexually.

The scientists were puzzled for decades by the fact that the bees could fly. These insects are pretty big, and the wings are small, and they are not aerodynamics. Lots of theories have been issued in order to prove why the bumblebees can fly. It seems that the reason why they can fly is because they flap their wings 230 times per second, and because they move their wings in a very peculiar manner. There you go, these are the biggest mysteries explained by science.11
