Nadal, Wozniacki Top-Seeds at the US Open
Five-time winner this season Rafa Nadal was tabled as top seed at the US Open that is scheduled to begin at the end of this month. World number one ATP and Wimbledon holder has collected this year five success, starting with the Monte Carlo Masters in April and continuing with Rome Masters, Madrid Masters and the two grand slams in Paris and London. Despite the Spaniard didn’t win anything since June, this assured his first place in the ATP ranking, gaining throughout the season 10,745 points, about 3 thousand ahead of former world champion Swiss Roger Federer who follows the Spaniard.
Roger might be selected second seed at the Flushing Meadows this returning from a long rest with two finals in Toronto two weeks ago and in Cincinnati, the last one being uneasily claimed by the Swiss in front of American Mardy Fish, Federer beating the host in three sets. However, with just one week remained before the US Open, the New Heaven is now in progress as none of the top five ATP joined the American tour where Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis is top seeded in front of Brazilian Thomaz Belluci. With defending man Juan Martin Del Potro aside of the US Open, both Nadal and Federer will struggle in order to claim or regain the trophy as the Spaniard would probably do it a bit more, taking account that Nadal won every each of the grand slam trophies, but the US one, while the Swiss will aim his sixth Flushing Meadows success. As for the women, Danish Caroline Wozniacki will be the first seeded after world champion Serena Williams announced her withdraw from the US Open due to an injury.

Wozniacki overcame third seeded WTA Belgian Kim Clijsters, who won third tournaments this year, in Brisbane, Miami and Cincinnati, while the Danish also collected three titles this season, including Ponte Vedra Beach, Copenhagen and Montreal. Wozniacki, who is also the runner-up of last year’s Flushing Meadows, became the first woman since 2003 to be tabled top seed at the US Open without winning a grand slam throughout the season. The Danish is followed by Clijsters, 2008 runner-up Jelena Jankovic and the French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur. The two Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova were also seeded for the US Open, from the 11th, respective 14th position. The US Open was claimed last year by Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro on men’s and Kim Clijsters.
