Christine O'Donnell

It seems that Christine O’Donnell defeated the Republican Mike Castle in the Delaware Senate race. Rumors say that the party launched a series of calls on the election day to dethrone her. A campaign official said that “phone calls showed signs of despair and have made false claims”. In fact, it was only a behind the scenes game hoping that the Republican and former Governor Mike Castle will win the elections again.

It looks like these political movements have not led to the desired results and O’Donnell managed to defeat Castle. One of the campaign’s representatives say that the phone-call is automatically and on the other end of the line was a woman named Kristin Murray who worked for O’Donnell in the 2008 campaign when she ran for Senate; she says that the winner “lives from Campaign Donations” and that the only thing that O’Donnell went into politics for is money (apparently Kristin called all voters that are known to be Republicans).

The team of O’Donnell does not deny that they hired a woman named Kristine Murray but they say that she was fired after two weeks because she was not the right person for the job and she was not able to fulfill her duties properly. The woman was fired by Tom Ross, when she worked for the Republican Party.

It is a very strange situation. How can someone launch an automated phone-call against an opponent from the same party? It is stranger given that, two years ago, the winner was the image of the Republican Party, being supported by big names for a position in the Senate. More strange is that O’Donnell is not seen as a person that can be chosen by their own party. “Her victory was only possible because, for the first time, political donors and activists from outside our little states picked the target, froze it and polarized it,” says David Weigel. This means that she won only because of luck and she will not be further supported by anybody.

O’Donnell won 53% of the vote against 47% obtained by Castle. O’Donnell is pro-weapons, against abortion and she believes that masturbation is a sin and she still managed to defeat Castle.
Washington Post describes Mike Castle as “one of the most popular politicians” while O’Donnell is seen as “a weaker opponent” and her victory is just “an unexpected force in politics.”
