Opposition Demands Expulsion of Syria From Arab League

Syrian opposition on Friday demanded the Arab League to take action against the regime in Damascus as it failed to honor the proposition it had committed itself to a week ago, when it agreed to pull out its troops from the streets of the restive cities, to in initiate dialogue with the opposition and to implement reforms.

The protest comes as activists groups accused the regime of having killed at least 37 people in the streets of Homs, the center of the rebellion against Assad’s regime over these past weeks when the crackdown intensified.

Human Rights Watch reports that some 587 people were killed in Homs between mid-April and August, and accuses Bashar’s regime of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and systematic torture in detention.

The Syrian opposition, which refused to participate in any kind of dialogue with the regime, demanded that Damascus be expelled from the Arab League as a result of failing to comply with the requirement to end violence.

Opposition said that soon after making the promises to the Qatari PM who represented the Arab League in the discussions in Damascus Assad launched a full scale attack on the neighborhoods of the opposition in Homs, shelling them and killing lots of civilians. The official reason of the government is that terrorist gangs are acting in the city.

The unconfirmed reports say that the death toll in Syria reached 3,500 people killed in eight months of ceaseless confrontation. The regime claims that 1,000 security forces were also killed, which, if true, would mean that the number of the defectors from the army has grown so high that it cam be said that in Syria is being waged a civil war.

The government insists that they have been true to the agreed plan, that 500 prisoners “with no blood on their hands” have been set free and that an Arab League delegation can inspect the situation in the field.
