She is one of the 150 patients that have chosen to be a part of the NOTES operations – natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery. This surgery is mainly made in order to reduce the pain and the infection on taking some parts of your stomach in a traditional manner. She was under the doctor Santiago Horgan, the director of the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, treatment. She chose him as he is widely known as having made some unusual and serious surgeries, such as taken gallbladders out of the mouth, appendix out of your mouth and as well performing this very operation, vaginally. He is not afraid of pulling bad things out from everywhere as he is very skillful.

There are some centers that specialize in NOTES operation and they are, therefore becoming more and more common. Just like everything, they were at first tested on animals, in 2004 and just afterward tried on human beings.

At the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York is the first place where the first NOTES procedure was performed. At that time, in 2007, the doctor removed the woman’s bladder through her vagina.

The main idea to a operation like this is to remove the bad part through a more direct manner. An incision is still in need but a smaller one and it will go directly through that path, if the patient is strong enough and can stand it this can be done through the mouth as well. Deciding which path to use in order to remove an organ depends on the situation as well and on the doctor most of the times. Each doctor has a different view of the general situation and he will choose in conformity with his view.

These surgeries may as well suffer a faster recovery and in a week you can be as good as new, in the vast majority of the operations.

Despite of the expensiveness of this operation, the overweight person, prefer paying as much as they can to get rid of the burden they have to put up with, each day. Having paid at most a sum of $21,000 was by no means a thing that Connie regrets – “The big thing was, I don’t have an incision in my stomach and I didn’t have to have my muscles cut,” she said. “Six days after the surgery, I went to the follow-up appointment and then we went to the mall.”

According to some studies, these surgeries can cause less pain in patients and as well they can lead to fewer complications. Anyhow, it is needed to be made more studies in the regard of showing that there are no other side effects of these procedures – NOTES. In this regard there started to be created special tools for these special surgeries. Despite of this fact, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved anyone yet.

There are not many patients that fancy the idea of having an organ taken out through their mount or through their vagina. They cannot get used to it and they would rather go through the traditional way. However, on explaining to them the advantages of this surgery, will somehow, make them understand better the meaning of this operation.

While some do not get used to the idea not have they heard about it, some especially came to San Diego after researching the operation on the internet and ask for the NOTES procedure to be performed on them. Soon there will be able for the patients to have kidneys, spleens and even parts of the colon removed using the NOTES procedures.
