President of Yemen Could Resign Office

Ali Abdullah Saleh (the-two-malcontents.com)

It would seem that the pan-Arab revolutionary wave is about to score another victory as later on Wednesday the president of Yemen Ali Abdullah Saleh appears to have agreed to a five-point plan with the opposition, that would include the demand that he stepped down by the end of the year.

It is not sure yet whether president Saleh would do something to attempt an alteration of the plan so that he could remain in power until 2013, when elections are expected to be held.

On the other hand, it is not sure what effect the deposition of the president would have on the integrity and unity of the country or whether it would solve the problems in this country that is considered one of the poorest in the Arabic Peninsula.

Unrest in Yemen (coto2.wordpress.com)

Yemen is confronted with a secessionist movement in the north, with another in the south and with heavy Al-Qaeda activity all over.

Saleh has been a president of this country for 30 years, and it would not be the first time he is making such promises he never kept in the past.

Protests in Yemen have been going on for weeks, with some violent moments and with many accusations from both sides, the presidential one accusing the fighters for freedom of wishing to split the country, while the people demanded economic reforms and freedoms.
