The announcement of the engagement between Prince William of Wales, second in line to the throne of England, and Kate Middleton, his long-term girlfriend, came as a delightful surprise for the people in the kingdom and for other people all over the planet.

Clarence House, the residence of the Prince, issued a statement yesterday according to which William of Wales and Kate Middleton were engaged ant that they would be married in the spring or summer of 2011.

The news had been expected for quite some time, as the relationship between the two was known and rumors about their engagement had been heard for a while, especially since the Middletons received, and honored, an invitation to a royal estate in Scotland, the first visit of Kate’s parents to the royal family.

The gesture that was able to crown this beautiful moment, however, was Prince William’s decision to honor his fiancée and the memory of his mother, Lady Diana, by giving Kate the ring Prince Charles had given Diana when they became engaged.

“It’s very special to me. Since Kate is special to me, it was only right that the two come together,” the Prince said.

On February 24, 1981, Prince Charles, the heir to the throne of England, proposed to young Diana Spencer, and preparations for the wedding of the decade were launched as soon as Diana agreed to the proposal.

The engagement ring she received was able to overcome all the lavish details of the wedding.

At first, Charles proposed without an engagement ring, asking Diana to consider the implications of becoming the wife of the future king of England before she accepted the proposal.

After she accepted, a selection of engagement rings was presented to her by Gerrard Jewellers, and she picked an 18 carats oval sapphire surrounded by 14 small diamonds ring. The price of the ring was of 28,000 British pounds, which is the equivalent of $65,000.

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to be the biggest wedding since the one of Charles and Diana.

The Middleton family was “delighted” and “thrilled” upon hearing about the engagement announcement.

William proposed to Kate in October, in Kenya, after he asked and received from Kate’s father the permission.
