The speculations on the date and venue of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton came to an end as the royal family announced that the couple will be married on April 29, 2011, at the Westminster Abbey, in London.

Furthermore, Prince Charles’ spokeswoman said the family would pay for the wedding following the example set by the marriages Princess Elisabeth and Prince Philip in 1947, or the prince and princess of Wales in 1981.

David Cameron, British PM said that the government will pay for any wider transportation or security-related costs.

The election of Westminster Abbey as the wedding venue meets the approval of the royal family, the public and the media, being the place where great events happened.

Westminster Abbey was founded in 960, and the Gothic church was built in 1245. it has been the coronation church since 1066.

Queen Elisabeth got married in this church in 1947, her father King George VI was married there in 1923.

In 1997, the funeral service for Princess Diana was performed at Westminster Abbey.

The wedding day will be a national holiday, David Cameron said, as soon as the Scottish government approves it, given that it is an autonomous government.

The wedding will be a momentous occasion, Cameron said, and the day will be declared national holiday, so that as many people as possible may enjoy it.

It is considered that the young couple chose the Westminster Abbey in order to avoid comparison to the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, which took place at Saint Paul’s Cathedral.

On April 29, the Anglican calendar of saints celebrates Saint Catherine, and it is possible that the date was chosen on purpose, especially since the palace referred to the young bride as Catherine instead of “Kate”.
