Russian President Advocates Chemical Castration of Convicted Pedophiles

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev suggested on Tuesday that chemical castration be introduced in the Russian penal code for the pedophiles.
The president said that the punishment exacted on those who commit offences against children should be “as harsh as possible,” and that the state should make use of all means possible to make this happen.
“Liberal approach on the matter,” Medvedev continued, “is totally unacceptable.”
He made these proposals during a meeting on development of the legal system in Russia.
Medvedev suggested discussions on whether it is appropriate to include the measure of injecting substances into the bodies of the child offenders that would block the action of their hormones.

The proposal Medvedev made comes within the frames of a wider preoccupation of the government to protect the population of the country, especially the younger generation.
The method has been implemented in several states, such as Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark or American states, on voluntary basis.
The discussion is not held in Russia only; 84 percent of the Poles approve of the method of chemical castration on the convicted pedophiles in Poland.
The most important counter-arguments are that the practice is barbaric, and that it is against human rights to alter the body of a person, no matter how brutal the crime.
The fact that it has never been seriously tested and there is no saying as to what its side effects may be is also a reason to be rejected by many.
