The Death Star

It seems that Hollywood likes to follows the trends. If a certain thing becomes a success, then that particular thing is used until it can not be used any more. There are many examples which can prove this point.

Think about a certain movie franchise: the first movie was great, because otherwise the other ones would have not been made, and the rest are worse and worse. A Nightmare on Elm Street has done it; Saw has done it, Halloween, Jaws, and so on. A more recent trend at Hollywood nowadays is represented by the 3-D movies. More and more movies are being created in this format, and while some of them are really excellent in this format (Avatar, A Christmas Carol), the other ones are awful (Clash of the Titans). Saw will be made 3-D, and it might be a good thing, as the horror movies have a certain appeal when they are made in this manner.

A couple of days ago, the biggest news from this point of view came when George Lucas announced that Star Wars will be remade in 3-D. George Lucas stated that he wants to remake all of the six Star Wars movies in 3-D, and to release them in cinemas again. This time they will be released in the proper order, meaning that the 1999 Star Wars movie, “Episode I: The Phantom Menace “will be the first one that will appear in 3-D in cinemas. The movie is set to be released in 2012, which means that the Industrial Light & Magic team which was involved in the creation of all the Star Wars films will have a lot of work to do. It is too bad that they can not receive help from the Force.

The news about the 3-D remake came as a surprise for many, and it created split opinions about it. Some consider it to be a good thing, whereas some said that the change was not necessarily. The order of the movies made people happy, as it is a known fact that the original three are considered to be way better than the newer ones. They saved the best things for later. Industrial Light & Magic was created by George Lucas when he started working on the first Star Wars movie. Now the people who work at the company together with Mr. Knoll, a visual effects supervisor will have to convert all of the six movies into 3-D formats. Like I said, the task will not be easy, because the movies are full of impressing special effects, or at least they should be now, as the ones from 1977 can not be considered too breathtaking.

There are lots of space fights, light saber duels, which need to be transformed in 3-D. If they manage to do it, the movies will look very great, and since George Lucas is there to control the operation it is very likely that the movies will receive the proper “facelift”. One of the biggest problems is the fact that the original footage of the first movie is almost 35 years old. That can be a huge headache, and some have said that since the movies are so old, they should not be recreated, just for the sake of doing the same thing as everyone else does. Mr. Knoll said that the changes will impress everyone, and he also said that the main reason why people want to see the movies in 3-D is because it gives them the feeling if being there.

He said that in the case of the 3-D movies, they should make you feel that you would like to belong to those words, and given the variety of the worlds from Star Wars, it is very likely that they will attract the viewers. The viewers will be able to be in the Cantina together with Han Solo and Luke, and they will get too experience the process of destroying the Death Star. It is without a doubt that the success which Avatar had was one of the reasons why George Lucas decided to reboot the movies. The movie made $2.7 billion, which is a record that will not be beaten very soon. The success of that movie caused the change of certain 2-D movies into 3-D. Alice in Wonderland did it, and Clash of the Titans did it as well. These movies did great at the box office, but they were criticized for the fact that they lacked in quality. Star Wars will be the first movie franchise will get the reboot. For a very long time Mr. Lucas has declared that he wasn’t a big fan of the 3-D movies, but that he wanted to create the Star Wars movies in this format for a very long time. He said that the main reason why he did not made the Star Wars movies in 3-D up to this point was because the required technology was not available. There are however various movie directors who have said that they are against the 3-D movies.

J.J Abrams, who directed the Star Trek movie and Christopher Nolan who has directed the new Batman movies and Inception said that they do not like to make their movies in 3-D. Mr. Knoll said that the conversion from 2-D to 3-D will not be a problem, but he said that new special effects will not be added to the movies. Everything will remain the same, only that the viewers will get to “be” in the action presented in the movies. Many Star Wars fans said that they will not pay to see the movies in the theaters because they do not consider that the change was mandatory. Many have said that this will start a new trend, such as very old black-and-white movies being remade in color versions. Besides, people said that there are DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the Star Wars movies, and that they will stick to those.
