Stosur Wins US Open

Samantha Stosur win her first US Open trophy
Samantha Stosur won her first Grand Slam trophy of career after easing past Serena Williams in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday at the Flushing Meadows.
The Aussie, who had started the tournament as ninth favorite, needed only one hour and 13 minutes to capture the last Grand Slam title of the year. Stosur gave Williams no chance to get ahead of her, breaking the American five times in nine tries. The American, who has won three US Open trophies, last occasion in 2008, converted only one out of five break points, finishing the game with a 52 first serve percentage, 19 winners, 25 unforced errors and a poor 30 return percentage.
On the other side, Stosur, who had followed a two set win against second seed Vera Zvonareva, came up with a 65 first serve percentage, 12 unforced errors, 20 winners and a 52 return percentage. The Aussie thus dominated the game at almost all facets, the US Open trophy being her first success of the season, as well.
Reflected Stosur after the meeting: “I had one of my best days and I’m very fortunate that I had it on this stage in New York. Ever since I started playing it was a dream of mine to be here one day. I don’t really know what to say. Serena, you are a fantastic player, great champion and have done wonders for our sport.”
Yesterday’s clash between the two was their third one of the year. Stosur has won two games with Williams this year, including a Cincinnati win, while the American won the first meeting in Toronto. Overall, the head to head series between the two is still led 4-3 by the 29 year old American.
En route to the final, Stosur had ousted Angelique Kerber 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the semi finals, Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 in the final eight round, Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the fourth round, Nadia Petrova 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 in the previous one, Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-4 in the second term and Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-3 in the opening day.
As for Williams, she had previously eliminated top seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 in the final four term, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-1 in the quarter finals, former world leader Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round, Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 7-6 in the third one, Michaella Krajicek 6-0, 6-1 in the second phase and Bojana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-1 in the opener.
As result of the US Open success, Stosur is to receive a 1,800,000 dollar check and 2000 points WTA, while Williams is to pocket a 900,000 dollar check and 1400 points.
