Japan was struck by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in the country in the last century.
The strong earthquake was followed by a tsunami as high as 10 meters. During the events about 18 people were killed and there are many others reported missing. “Major damage occurred in the Tohoku area” Prime Minister Naoto Kan said, adding that “I call on citizens to act calmly. Especially those who are near a beach, please evacuate to higher ground to avoid the tsunami.” The earthquake stuck at 2:46 p.m. local time in Sendai, north of Tokyo, at a depth of 24 kilometers.
Currently, the Japanese authorities have ordered the army to help rescue efforts after the quake. As the tsunami struck, many buildings were destroyed, reports claiming that actually large buildings were lifted off their foundations and dragged into the ocean. Fast moving waves, moving inland washing away buildings, ships, cars and land were seen during the events. More than 27 flights have been impacted by the quake and a statement said that 5,290 people were affected in these conditions, while the Narita airport was closed due the incidents. The airport in Sendai was flooded by the tsunami. In fact, both air and ground transportation has been disrupted or limited within the region, CNN news reported.
