Situation continues to be volatile in Syria after the violent crackdown on demonstrations over the weekend which claimed the lives of hundreds of people who were protesting the lack of democratic reform in their country.

After the weekly prayer on Friday, thousands of Syrians stayed in the streets demanding the al-Assad regime to implement democratic reforms.

The regime reacted by using real bullets and armored vehicles on people, leaving about 120 people dead, thus rising the death toll to 400 since the unrest broke out in mid-March in the city of Daraa.

On Tuesday, the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, condemned the violent reaction of the regime and demanded an independent investigation.

On Wednesday, the National Initiative for Change, one of the opposition groups, issued a statement by which it was saying that in order to avoid the falling of the nation into an age of chaos, violence and civil war the regime must shift to democracy.

Opposition groups threatened to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad, if these demands were not met.

They maintained that if al-Assad didn’t want to go down in history as the president in an age of transition, the course to be followed would be that of Egypt and Tunisia.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in turn that it may be possible that Bashar al Assad could not implement the changes that are being demanded of him.  “I am not sure [Assad] is free to pursue a reform agenda,” Hague said.

Meanwhile, the protestors in Yemen succeeded in making president Saleh promise to leave office within a month.
