Do you like this story?

We are surrounded by all kind of smells that practically wrap us in their spell and strike us as being flowery, pungent, sharp, musty, spicy, sweet, earthy or fresh. Have I used all the adjectives that usually describe smells or can you think of others too? Most certainly I haven’t exhausted all adjectives associated to smell as there are so many; it only takes time and imagination to find new and new ones.

How about identifying the smells in nature? What smell from the natural womb appeals to your senses the most? When making the connection between smells and nature I cannot fail to mention the ones which I like most: the smell of wild grass after a spring rain, the smell of recently cut grass, the smell of fresh fruit, the smell of flowers, the smell of lilacs and magnolia in the breeze, the smell of the sea’s breeze and the list can continue and it will perhaps never end.

When mentioning all these smells you most probably associated each smell with an image. When talking about the smell of flowers you must have imagined yourself on a field surrounded by flowers or perhaps  lying down on a bed made of flowers. And the pictures of all these smells coming from nature probably succeed in your mind as some kind of a movie, a movie directed by you and your imagination.

At times we tend to connect a certain smell with a certain period from our lives. It may be related to our childhood or just a vacation spent at the seaside or on some island or perhaps a certain country. What comes to my mind now that I write about the smells in nature is the smell of fresh cut grass. I simply find it alluring and refreshing for one’s senses. If it were for me I would tread upon it and let the smell pervade me. It reminds me of a sunny day when I decided to take a walk in the park and at that very moment a smell got to me; it was the smell of fresh cut grass.

What smell from nature pertains to you the most?

I find the smells in nature very refreshing and energizing for one. No matter if we are talking about the smells of flowers, fallen leaves, ocean, running water or forest, they all get to our senses. They may be difficult to be described in words but we most certainly never forget them, making nature even more wonderful and amazing, a place where one wants to spend an infinite part of its life. Yet, as we have to survive we are obliged to work and as such forced to spend hours and hours in front of computers or at some queue waiting to solve some important matter. Despite these entire things one should not forget to take his time and smell a flower or crush a leaf between his fingers in order to feel its unique smell.

Evidences show that when being asked about the smells in nature they like most, people often answered that the smell that reached to them was the smell of the air after a rain. I find this distinctive and refreshing; earthy would probably be the adjective I’d choose to use when talking about this smell. Yet how many of you know that the smell of air after a rainstorm is caused in fact by a bacterium which feels at home in a damp and warm environment. In fact science revealed the fact that this smell is caused by some spores that spread into the air and reach us too as we breathe them in. For most of you all the poetry is probably gone now as most of us tend to associate this smell with rather romantic things. How many of you find rainfalls energizing? How many of you felt like dancing in the rain at some point in their life? Some of you may feel that I am crazy when mentioning all these things as for some conservative persons they sound like taboo things, yet some may like the idea. I find the smell after a rain sweet and fresh.

The pleasant smell may also come as a result of the oils released by the plants and trees. Have you ever noticed the smell of flowers after a rain or better the smell of grass? It can simply put one into motion, energize him and make one achieve a state of perfect relaxation.

How about the smell of fresh fruit? I especially love the smell of oranges and lemons and like most of you I tend to associate the smell of oranges with Christmas holidays and the family members gathering all together in some mountain cottage.

How do smells coming from nature make you feel? Do they manage to relax you or on the contrary they make you stiff? Do you take your time and find yourself able to distinguish between the smell of roses and jasmine? Does rain smell in any way to you or is it just some water pouring down from the sky? It all depends on the importance nature plays in one’s life and like almost everything in this life on personal choices and one’s way of being and relating with the surrounding environment.

Each time you get into a natural setting you should learn to observe the smells coming from nature regardless of its origin; it may be the grass or the flowers or perhaps the leaves or the rain which you sometimes find it bothering.

All these smells are part of nature. Some of you may like one more than the other, yet there must be one which appeals to you the most. Living in the era of speed most of us forget to take their time to smell a flower or enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass and in fact forget to live life fully cause according to the saying which says that the strongest essences are to be found in small bottles, nature may not be the smallest bottle yet it certainly hosts the most fragrant essences.11
