Reading a book can be a very exciting thing, as it gives you the opportunity to escape from the real world, and live an adventure in the world presented in the book. The only thing that you need to be able to do so is imagination. However there are many books that have caused lots of controversy, and these are the most controversial ones.

The Holly Blood and the Holly Grail

The book The Holly Blood and the Holly Grail is the book that influenced Dan Brown to write the famous The Da Vinci Code . This book which was published in 1982 in the UK was written by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln. The book says that Jesus was a simple man, that He had sex with Mary Magdalene that they had children, who later moved to France where they founded the Merovingian Dynasty. As you can imagine, the book upset lots of Christians. The problem is that they did not have any facts that could back up their claims. It is also said in the book that the Roman Catholic Church corrupted the truth in order to control the people.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been banned in many schools from the United States of America. The problem with this book is the fact that it used the N-word. Mark Twain wrote the book at a time when people could use the word without any problems, as it was not dangerous to use it. The reality is that during those times, the white people called the black people, ni**** because it was the most popular word in the nationwide vernacular. The term was not pejorative as it is right now.  The term is used 213 times in the book, and it is not surprising that it has been forbidden in so many schools.

The Book of the Mormons

The Book of the Mormons is controversial for a specific reason. At the end of the Judeo-Christian Bible, in Revelation, there is a verse that says “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:…” The Mormons say that the passage refers strictly to the Book of Revelations and not to the whole Bible. If that is the case, then Joseph Smith, the man who wrote the Book of Mormons should not worry too much about the threats from the Bible. It is said that the main reason why the Mormon religion has been invented is because Smith wanted to marry two women, and he could not do it because it was forbidden by law to do so. He then created the religion in order to marry more than one woman. The Mormon religion has some weird belief, such as that God has sex with angels, and that during the forty days between Resurrection and Ascension, Jesus preached to the Native Americans.

The God Delusion

Richard Dawkins wrote the book The God Delusion, which became the most important book that deals with this issue so far. The book managed to sell more than 2 million copies, as the atheists praised it and the Christians criticized it. Dawkins says that religion is an illusion, as there is no certainty that God exists. He then says why God could have not existed. He also talks about morality, saying that religion is not related to it, and that the people are not influenced by religion when they decide to do or not to do bad things. Numerous books have been written as a response to it, some condemning it, some praising it.

If I did it: Confessions of the Killer

O.J Simpson is a very controversial person, and his trial is renowned worldwide. He wrote the book If I did it: Confessions of the Killer, in which he explains how he would have killed both his ex-wife and her lover. Of course, everything was from a hypothetic point of view, but it seemed that the majority believed otherwise. Most of the people stated that he was the real killer, and the book only made it worse for him. He mentions in the beginning of the book that he isn’t the actual killer, but that this is the way in which he would have killed them.

The Prince

Niccolo Machiavelli’s most famous book, The Prince, has been condemned by many, because it is said that it encourages tyranny. Machiavelli stated that the best ruler in the world is the one who is loved by his people. He said that it is very difficult for a ruler to achieve this, but he mentions that the next best thing is a ruler who is feared by his people. That is way easier to achieve, according to him. The book talks about the philosophy of self-reliance, which can be interpreted as do not help someone, because that person can help himself. The Church of Satan uses self-reliance as one of their founding principles.

The Quar’an

The Qur’an is considered to be the divine speech of God, revealed through the Archangel Gabriel to Muhammad. The Muslims revere both Moses and Jesus, but they believe that Jesus was a regular person. Most of the Christians believe that the book is bad because it makes people kill other people in order to go to heaven where they will be awarded 72 virgins. The word used for virgin in the Qur’an, is “houri”, which can also be translated as angels. The book is very peaceful, and it does not say that one should kill in order to be accepted in Heaven.

The Bible

The Bible is the most popular book in the world, and it is a book that has created lots of controversies. The atheists say that the book is confusing because in the Old Testament, God is seen as cruel and barbaric, and that in the New Testament, He is seen as self-righteous. They also say that the Bible is too ambiguous, and because of it, it does not send the proper messages. It is the most quoted book in the world, being quoted even by the most atheistic philosophers. Some say, that all the wars in the world have been caused by it.

These are the most controversial books.
