Wolves

There are many animals that can kill a man, but there are few that like to do it because they like the taste. These animals are called “man eaters”, and in what follows I am going to present you the top ten man eaters in history.

#10
The Njombe Lions

The top 10 spot on this list is very interesting because in this case, there was more than one single animal that preferred the taste of human flesh. The spot is occupied by the pride of lions that terrorized the people from the town of Njombe, Tanzania, during the 1930s. They preferred to kill men instead of other animals and the local legend says that they were controlled by the local witch doctor that controlled them and told them who to attack.

It is said that the lions killed more than 1,500 people, which makes it one of the most gruesome animal attacks in the world, and the worst lion attack in History. George Rushby took the matter into his own hands, as he killed more than 15 lions, and it is said that the rest of the lions from the pride ran from the area.

The Two-toed Alligator

It is unknown which stories about Two Toed Tom are real and which are fabricated, but the truth is that he existed. It is said that he used to roam the swamps of Alabama and Florida during the 1920s, killing anyone that he encountered. The reason why he received this nickname is because he lost all the toes from his leg, except two from his left hand. He leaved unique tracks on the sand, and because of this, the people knew when he was around. He had a length of four and a half meter long, and the people stated that he was sent by the Devil himself to hunt them down. He liked to hunt on women, as they were the ones who washed the clothes in the river. It is said that the people tried to kill him by shooting him, but the bullets did not do any damage. It is very likely that this story is fabricated.

The locals stated that one man tried to kill him for more than twenty years and that he once threw lots of dynamite in the pond where he was located. The dynamite killed every living creature from the pond, except for Tom. Soon afterwards he killed that man’s daughter, and it is very likely that this story was made up as well. What makes the story even more interesting is the fact that people claimed to have seen a two-toed alligator in the 80s, and they believe that they saw Tom. Many people tried to capture him, but none managed to do it. Because of this, some say that Tom never actually existed, that everything is a fabrication.

Kesagake The Bear

The Japanese Giant Hornet is considered to be the most dangerous wild animal in Japan. The man eater which takes this spot comes from Japan, but it is not the hornet. The place is occupied by the Brown Bear, which is one of the biggest and most powerful land predators from Japan. One of the biggest killings associated to a Brown Bear took place in 1915, in the village of Sankebetsu, Hokkaido. Not too many people lived in that area during those periods, and the land was dominated by the Brown Bears, the one who killed the people was called Kesagake. He often came in the area in order to eat the corn which was harvested by the villagers. He annoyed them so they shot him, wounding him pretty bad. They believed that he would stop coming back, fearing for his life, but they were wrong. Very wrong.

On December 9 of 1915 he went into a house in which a woman took care of a baby. He attacked and killed the baby, and then he attacked the woman, carrying her to the forest. When the people went to the house they found blood everywhere. More than 30 men went into the forest in order to save the woman. They encountered the bear once again, shot him again, but they failed to kill him. They found the remains of the woman in a certain place, which indicated that the bear wanted to eat the rest of her later. He then attacked another house, killing everyone inside of it. There were four people inside the house: a woman, her unborn baby, and two children. The bear managed to kill six persons in two days. The bear was eventually killed by a skilled hunter, who revealed the fact that it killed numerous people prior to this incident. People abandoned the area, and the attacks performed by Kesagake have remained the biggest animal attacks from Japan even up to this point.

The “Jaws” Shark

The shark attacks performed in the waters of New Jersey took place in 1916, a time when the people did not have too much information about the sharks, some scientists believing that they are harmless. This was the first time when the attacks of a man eating shark were recorded. The first victim was Charles Vansant, who was attacked while swimming in very shallow waters with his dog. His friends and some relatives were witnesses to the attack, but they could not do anything to save him. Charles Bruder was attacked five days later, being attacked by the same shark, having the same fate as Charles Vensant. The scientists were convinced that the attacks were not performed by a shark, as they believed that the sharks are docile. They stated that the killer must have been a sea turtle or a killer whale.

A boy was attacked soon afterwards in a creek near the town of Matawan. A man jumped in the water in order to save him, but he was killed by the shark as well. A third person was attacked 30 minutes after the attack on the man who tried to save the boy, and this one was the luckiest, as he managed to survive. a young female Great White Shark was captured in the Raritan Bay near the Matawan Creek and it is said that she had human remains in her stomach. Not too many people were convinced that she did it though, especially since the scientists kept on saying that sharks do not attack people. It is most certainly that the creek attacks were not performed by a Great White Shark, but by a Bull Shark, as the Great White can not survive in fresh water. Regardless of which shark did it, the shark frenzy was initiated. These incidents lead to the writing of the novel “Jaws” which was then turned into a highly successful movie.

#6
The Mysore Bear

Sloth Bears have the capacity of killing people, and it is said that they do it very often in India. However, usually they do not consume the meat of the people they kill. One of them did, and it liked it more than any other type of food. The bear was called the Mysore Killer Bear, and there are many stories associated with it. Some say that the bear was a male and it kidnapped a woman in order to mate with her. She was rescued, and because of this, it went into a killing spree. Others say that the bear was a female and she killed the people because it wanted to avenge the death of her cubs.

Those are all improbable and impossible stories, but the experts believe that the bear became so violent because it was injured by the humans. More than 30 people were attacked by the bear, and 12 of them died because of it. Kenneth Anderson, a famed big game hunter, managed to kill it, but only after his third attempt.
