There are numerous dog breeds, which can vary in shape, color, and size. There are some which can be carried in a purse, whereas there are others which look more suitable for a stable. It is not certain how the dogs became what they are today, but it is believed that they evolved from the gray wolf. People chose to tame them for different reasons, whether because of their personalities, intelligence, or aggressively. These are the most popular dog breeds.

10. The Shih Tzu, which is a toy dog, has a very distinct look. It has its head well up, and its tail is curved over the bag, as if he would walk with in an arrogant posture. The Chinese royals loved them, and as a result they kept them as pets for more than one thousand years. The AKC states that this breed has appeared as a result of a crossing between the Tibetan mountain dog and Pekingese. This breed was a house pet for the Ming Dynasty for more than 300 years.

9. The poodle looks more like a toy made out of plush than a real dog, but the reality is that the poodles are great at obedience training and they are very smart. The breed was first bred in Germany, and his task was that of retrieving prey from the water. The iconic hairstyle was designed by the hunters, who believed that it will not cause such a drag in the water. The remaining patches of fur have the task of preventing the joints and the vital organs from the cold. There are three different types of poodles: the standard variety, the miniature, which was used for finding truffles, and the toy poodle which was used in performances. They also come in a variety of colors.

8. The “hotdog” dogs, which are officially called Dachshunds were bred to dig holes in the ground and to fight the badgers. They were first breed in Germany in 1600s, but they became popular in the U.S in 1900s. There are two different types of Dachshunds: standard and miniature.

7. The bulldogs are considered to be some of the cutest and lovable dogs. They have a unique appearance, as they seem to have a squashed, wrinkly face. No matter how cute they are, these dogs are susceptible to a range of health problems including overheating. They are very cute, but the original ones were used as bait for the bulls, and they were created to be very tough and insensitive to pain. The bull bating became illegal in 1835, and in just a few generations, the bulldog got rid of its ferocious bite.

6. The boxers are well known for their unusual standing up position on their hind legs; they seem to box with their front paws. The boxers were developed in Germany in the 19th century, and they were initially used for fighting and for restraining large game like wild boar. Even though they were used for fighting, they are known for craving the human attention, especially from children.

5. The beagles are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. The best-known individual of the breed is the cartoon character Snoopy. They have a very cheery temperament and they are great to use in hunting. The larger types were used in hunting deer whereas the smaller ones were used for hunting down rabbits. It is believed that the name might have come from the French word “be’geule,” as a reference for their barking and noises which they made when they went hunting, or for their small size.

4. The Golden Retrievers were created by Lord Tweedmouth. He wanted to create a dog breed which would make an excellent retriever in the Scottish game, climate, and terrain. He obtained the Golden Retriever by crossing the Yellow Retriever with the Tweed Water Spaniel, which is an extinct dog breed. He then crossed the Irish setter, bloodhound and other Tweed Water spaniels, and as a result he obtained the Golden Retrievers which everybody knows today. The dog has a hard-working mindset and as a result they are great hunters, but they can also be used as guides, assistant, and search and rescue dogs.

3. Another dog breed which belongs to the toy group is the Yorkshire terrier. The Yorkies, as they are affectionately called have a weight ranging between 1.8 and 3.2 kg, or 4 and 7 pounds. These dogs are named for the city where they originated, Yorkshire. Back in the days, their main task was to catch rats in clothing mills. The situation has completely changed nowadays, because this breed is often associated with luxury, richness, and fame. They have evolved a lot in the last decade, making their way up to the high society from the lower classes.

2. The second spot on this list is occupied by the German Shepherds, one of the fewest dogs of breeds that have a 9-to-5 job. The German Shepherds are often used in many cases as police, guard and military dogs. Just like many other breeds from the list, this breed was created in Germany, but that wasn’t too hard to figure out. They were obtained from a mix of herding and farm dogs, and were first created in Karlsruhe, in 1899. They were first introduced in America in 1907. They are extremely popular amongst the people as well, as they can be very affectionate, and they can be used as guard dogs as well.

1. The number one spot on the list is occupied by the “Labs”, or the Labrador Retrievers. They are originally from Newfoundland where they helped the fishermen to pull nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines. These dogs received their retrieving skills after they were crossed with setters, spaniels and other types of retrievers. The Labs are prone to exercise-induced collapse, which occurs after an intense physical activity which makes them to lose the control of their hind legs. It is said that 30 percent of the Labradors Retrievers carry the gene which triggers the EIC.

They are truly amazing. These are the most popular dog breeds. Which one do you like the most? Do you have a dog? If you do, what breed is it?

I am surprised that the Husky or Chow-Chow is not in your list. I think Chow-Chows are amazing dogs because they have this rather special appearance. They tongue is purple and they have funny looking fur which makes them look like small lions. I hear they are very friendly and when you see a Chow-Chow puppy you cannot help but fall in love with him. They are the most beautiful dogs in the world!
