Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of the Past Decade
Hundreds of science fiction movies have been created and it is very likely that they will still be made in the future as well. The people like them, as they are interesting, and they can draw your attention. Many of them are bad, I have to admit that, but there are some that are considered masterpieces, such as Star Wars, and Star Trek.
In what follows I am going to present you what I believe to be the best science fiction movies of the past decade. I should tell you that there are some movies which I did not include in the list, such as The Dark Knight, Star Trek, Avatar, and many others. They are good, but in my opinion they did not meet all the requirements needed by a true sci-fi movie. Let’s get things started then.
10. Wall-E
Even though Wall-E is an animated movie, it is movie for adults as well. It presents the story of a robot, which also gives the name of the movie, and his quest for love. It also presents the world in a utopian or dystopian manner, depends on how you see it. You should definitely see this movie.
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
This movie is a proof that not all the science fiction films have to be about aliens, or about meteor threats and such. The movie tells the story of a couple who breaks up. The couple is played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett. After the break-up, Jim Carrey’s character wants to forget about his ex, and because of that he resorts to a break through technology which erases one’s memory about the former relationships. The story might sound silly, but this movie is excellent as it offers one of the best presentations of a relationship, and of the pain one goes through when the break-up occurs.
8. Sunshine
This movie is directed by Danny Boyle, and through it he proved once again that he can direct. The movie is set 50 years into the future, when the sun has stopped. A team of astronauts is formed, and their task is to go to the sun and ignite it again. This is more than a common hero movie, as all the crew members make certain sacrifices in order to be able to achieve the task, they are all heroes for different reasons.
7. Solaris
Solaris is somewhat similar to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, because just like that movie this one also deals with human relationships and with love. The movie is a remake, and it is one of the fewest remakes which are just as good as the originals, or even better. The acting is great, the visuals are stunning, and the special effects make the film even better. It makes you ask yourself questions such as: do we see the others for who they are, or for who we remember them to be? Or are we in love with a person or with the idea of a person?
6. Serenity
Not too many people watched Firefly, the TV series which is the base of this movie. Because of that not too many people went to the cinema to watch Serenity, and they sure missed a lot. The movie is one of the best space adventure films and it has one of the most beautiful universes ever created. The movie is more than a story about a ship which flies in space, is about the people from that ship, and about their relationship. The movie makes you feel about the people on the ship, and once you see the movie, you regret that you did not follow the TV series.
5. Equilibrium
This is another movie which I enjoyed. It tells the story of a future in which the freedom is considered illegal; they can not show emotions, they can not read books, listen to music, and so on. However, just like in many other dystopian books or movies, such as Fahrenheit 451, one of the people who are supposed to be part of the system will fight against it.
4. Donnie Darko
This movie is one of the strangest movies on the list, and as a result maybe you will not like it. It involves giant humanoid rabbits, and many other strange things. However this movie makes you wonder about what happens in it, you can not really understand what is going on. It makes you feel for the characters and it makes you wonder what would have you done if you would have been put in their situation.
3. Children of Men.
The movie tells the story of a dystopian future in which the world faces extinction because all the women from the world have become infertile. A whole generation has passed and no child has been born. The British government wants to deport all foreigners in order to eliminate the chaos, but all the people have already become desperate and feel hopeless. Theo Faron who is played by Clive Owen finds a woman who is pregnant and his task is to keep her safe so she can give birth to the baby.

2. The Fountain
This movie present three stories, one from the past, one from the present, and one from the future. The main character which is played by Hugh Jackman, tries to save his wife in all of the stories. In the past he is a Mayan conquistador and tries to find the tree of life, in the present he is a doctor and tries to find a cure for her, and in the future he travels to a planet where he can save her.
1. District 9
This movie is excellent, as it present the current times in an alternate universe. The movie is set in South Africa, which has been populated by aliens for many years now. They can not leave, and the movie presents the way in which a foreigner has to suffer in a different society. The filming style is excellent, as in the beginning you have the feeling that you are watching a documentary.
