The cryptozoology is the study of animals that are rumored to exist. You might have heard about most of them, but they have never been recorded. They are myths, urban legends, but despite this aspect, many of the people truly believe in them.

There are some animals which have passed the status of legends or myths, and they have been accepted by existing by the science. These are the okapi, giant squid and the gorilla. The “animals” such as the Loch Ness monster, Yeti, Bigfoot and so on have not been acknowledged, and probably they never will be. These are the top animals from cryptozoology.

The Gorilla

Yes, the gorilla was once included in the category of such animals as Nessie, and Bigfoot. For decades the people spoke about a giant ape which lives in the jungles of Africa. The locals called her “enge-ena”, and they stated that the animal was larger than a man. In 1847, an American missionary managed to obtain a skull and some bones of the mysterious creature. That is the moment when the science recognized it and named it gorilla.

The Giant Squid

You have seen them in numerous movies, TV shows, and so on. The giant squids featured there have the capacity of destroying entire ships; buy grabbing them with their tentacles and pulling them down in the deepness of the ocean. The giant squid has been an inspiration for the kraken, a giant sea monster with numerous arms from the Norwegian mythology. For many years the people believed that such a creature did not exist, but in 2005 a group of Japanese scientists managed to film one in its natural habitat. They tried to capture it, but after struggling for four hours they lost it. It is said that the giant squids can grow up to 43 feet in length, and that they can have arms up to 20 feet.

Bigfoot

Bigfoot, which is also known as Sasquatch is an ape-like creature which lives in the woods of Canada and United States of America. It is said that Bigfoot has feet up to 20 inches in length and that it can be up to 10 feet tall. Thousands of people have claimed that they have seen the creature, some even providing pictures and videos, but all of them proved to be fakes. Some say that Bigfoot is actually a member of the Gigantopithecus, which is a giant ape that died 100,000 years ago.

Coelacanth

The coelacanth is believed to be an ancient fish which existed millions of years ago. In 1938, a South African museum curator made the discovery of his lifetime, because as he was sorting through the local fishermen’s daily catch, he observed that one of them caught a coelacanth. Up until that point the only evidence that the scientists had about the fish was though the fossils which they collected. The discovery amazed the science world, as it was the first instance when an animal which was considered extinct for a very long time was found alive.

Homo Floresinesis

The tales of the Indonesian island of Flores have talked about the mysterious race of little people which they called the “Ebu Gogo” for a long time. They stated that those little people used to capture children, and that the constantly talked in murmur. Of course, the stories were considered to be part of their culture, but in 2003, the scientists discovered the remains of a new humanoid species called Homo Floresinesis in a cave from the island. It has been stated that the Homo Floresinesis might have lived with the regular people about 12,000 years ago.

The King Cheetah

The cheetah is a well known animal, but for decades the people from Africa spoke about a different type of cheetah, one that had large splotches and black stripes down its back instead of the regular markings that the cheetahs usually have. The people called that creature king cheetah. Many believed that the creature was a mixture between a cheetah and a leopard. The mystery was solved in 1981, when a kking cheetah was born in the De Wildt Cheetah Center in South Africa.

The ivory billed woodpecker

By the mid 1990s most of the people believed that the ivory billed woodpecker was long extinct because of the hunting and because of the deforestation. Just like in the case of the coelacanth, the ivory billed woodpecker made reappearance, as he was rediscovered in 2004 in Arkansas by a bird enthusiast. The researchers then obtained video and audio recordings of the bird.

The Loch Ness Monster

Nessie, as it is also called is supposed to live in the Loch Ness Lake from Scotland. Some say that Nessie is a plesiosaur, a large marine reptile which existed millions of years ago. Just like in the case of Bigfoot, the scientists do not believe in that theory, stating that there are very slim chances for the monster to actually exist.

Okapi

Imagine a giraffe and a zebra having a baby. The result would be an okapi. The creature has striped legs just like a zebra and the long neck just like a giraffe. Its neck is much smaller than the one of a giraffe, but its tongue has almost the same length as the giraffe’s. The Okapi can use its tongue to clean its ears and eyelids. Prior to 1901, the people from Congo were the only ones who knew about its existence.

The thylacine

The thylacine, which is also known as the Tasmanian tiger was a very large meat-eating marsupial that lived in Australia. The creature had a long tail, a stripped back, and a pouch just like the other marsupials have. The thylacine became extinct because of the humans, which happens in most of the cases. The last wild thylacine was seen in 1932, and the last living one died in a zoo in 1936. However many people have stated that the thylacine is alive, as they have declared that they have seen it.
