Whether it is the conflict in Afghanistan or the war in Iraq or any other conflict zone, the costs of the war are mainly measures in the loss of human lives. However, there is also a political cost, measurable in cold hard cash. According to a report issued by the United States of America, for the military conflicts in which they were involved between 2001 and now, the U.S. paid one thousand billion dollars. That’s twelve zeros, or one trillion dollars.

The report called “The cost of major American wars” reveals that the United States paid for the conflicts in AfghanistanIraq and other areas, between 2001 and now, one trillion dollars. If we take into account inflation and the money spent on the military conflicts, the “war on terrorism” is the most expensive war since the Second World War.

The American Congress’ report compares the costs of wars over 230 years – since the American Revolution to our times. While the war on terrorism cost one trillion dollars, according to the analyses of specialists, the Second World War cost four trillion dollars. This means that if the money is converted at the current value of the American dollar, the Second World War cost 36% of America’s gross domestic product, while the wars after September 11, 2001, cost some 1% of the gross domestic product.

The specialists also took into consideration that the bill for the war on terrorism could be much higher. An estimation made in 2007 by the U.S. Congress shows that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will cost over two trillion dollars by 2017.
