US Open: Wawrinka Ends American Dream
US Open quarter finals won’t include any American player. 25th seeded Stanislas Wawrinka ousted the last US man remained on course for the Flushing Meadows trophy, Sam Querrey. The Swiss needed five sets though in order to make the progress into the last eight to end the American dream 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. It was a very tough match as none could ever say who’s going to win at the end. The 25-year-old Wawrinka, who also eliminated fourth seeded Andy Murray in the third round, assured for the first time his place into the US Grand Slam quarters where he is expected to face Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who also passed Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
“It was an amazing match to finish here and to beat him in five sets was crazy. I was just fighting all the time to keep aggressive with my game,” the Swiss would declare after the game. Thus, he joins compatriot Roger Federer in the quarters as the second seeded will face Robin Soderling in the last eight. Wawrinka progressed into the quarters after facing tougher opponents by the rounds passed. He won his first two rounds in straight sets, but since he passed Juan Ignacio Chela he would win in four sets the meeting against Murray and in five against today’s Querrey. The Swiss won this season one ATP title in Casablanca where he defeated Romanian Victor Hanescu. However, the crowd itself proved not to be enough for Sam who struggled to save what both Roddick and Mardy Fish missed, a place in the best eight. Nevertheless, top three ATP are still on the course, too, so this shouldn’t surprise anyone. On the other hand, two other places in the quarters are already reserved for the Spaniards.

This means that both fourth rounds remained to be disputed include two Spanish confrontations. On one hand, top seeded Rafa Nadal will face compatriot Feliciano Lopez, while the other match sees David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco to play for a place further. “That is positive news for us. Especially is very positive because I think, for the ball and for the court, it is probably the most difficult tournament for us. So that is very important news for Spanish tennis,” Nadal commented the Spanish adventure at Meadows.
