Washington: Berdych Beats Tursunov to Reach Third Round
Top seeded in Washington Thomas Berdych won the match against powerful Russian Dmitry Tursunov in three sets, after losing the second. The Czech, who didn’t play since reaching the final at Wimbledon, struggled and showed the road to the English final wasn’t any-luck. Wimbledon’s finalist said right after he defeated the Russian that despite his opponent’s very good serving, this gathered himself to provide the victory with an easy 6-1 final set. He said: “The important thing was that I could go through. He just kept serving well and won the second set. But I got some power and energy and was able to win the third set. I’m quite happy to start after Wimbledon with another win.”
ATP’s number eight of the moment won the match with 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 and will meet in the third round Kazakhstan Andrey Golubev. Berdych also added: “It was a very important moment. I was trying to really concentrate. In the other sets I started off pretty bad. I wanted to do it differently in the third set, give him some more pressure. It was a key moment.” Serbian Tipsarevic also progressed into the third round in Washington after defeating American Sam Querrey in two straight sets 7-6, 6-3. This declared: “I was focused from start to finish. I could see Sam was a little bit tired from the LA week. I’m so happy in these conditions I managed to close it out in two sets. At one point I was getting aggravated because two or three times we played a very tough game and it’s 30-30 and he has a second serve (and) he then serves a bomb, a ace.”

“On one side it was getting me nervous but on the other it gave me mental strength, saying to myself, ‘he’s getting tired. Just hang in there.’ I managed to stay disciplined and (the double fault) finally came,” added the 26-year-old player, who will meet in the third round Colombian Alejandro Falla who defeated on his own one of the main favorites in Washington and former world champion, Lleyton Hewitt after the Australian abandoned.11
